As fans know, the Kardashian family has a long history with OJ, who was the best friend (and godfather) of Kim’s father, the late Robert Kardashian Sr., at the time he married Kris Jenner. Later in life, Robert Sr. became part of his friend’s legal team when OJ was tried for the double murder of his wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman.

The former NFL player was acquitted, although the public was long hesitant to declare him innocent. However, according to NPR, he was found responsible for the deaths and ordered to pay $33.5 million to the victims’ families.

Kris Jenner opens up about Nicole and OJ Simpson she knew before new murder trial TV series: ‘They were my family’

Kris previously spoke about the division the trial has caused for the Kardashian family, calling it “devastating.”

“You have Robert Kardashian on the defensive team defending [O.J.’s] team, and you have me, my girlfriend is dead,” Kris continued Dr. Phil 2009. “It was a very difficult situation and what we needed to do was come together as a family and decide that this was not going to tear us apart.”

In the same interview, Kim recalled being a child and feeling she “didn’t know which parent to side with” as the trial unfolded. “I remember going to the courthouse and Kourtney and I went with my dad. My mom is sitting across the way [the room] with Nicole Brown’s family,” she said.

Kris then told PEOPLE in 2016, “They were the two best friends I ever had in my life. They were my family. OJ was like my big brother. So not only was I grieving the loss of Nicole, but I was grieving the loss of OJ and that relationship.”

Kim also opened up about how the historic trial affected their family dynamic in October 2020 during an interview with David Letterman for the third season of his Netflix talk show, My next guest needs no introduction.

“It was dinner time, we were all sitting down, and I answered the phone. It was a call from the prison, and it was OJ, and I gave my mom the phone because he wanted to talk to her,” she said. “And I just remember them getting into it.”

Kim, who was about 14 at the time of the trial, said the conflict between her divorced parents was difficult to deal with.

“My mum was very vocal about her feelings – she believed he had killed her friend and it was really traumatizing for her,” she explained. “And then we would go to my dad’s house and it was a completely different situation there. We didn’t really know what to believe or whose side to take as children, because we didn’t want to hurt one of our parents’ feelings.”

“He tore my family apart, I would say, throughout the trial,” she added.
