The American guitarist was born on September 4, 1960 in Seattle, Washington. He, on the other hand, grew up in the Chicago suburb of Park Forest, not in the same city. He was born to Boniface Thayil, who worked in Chicago after graduating from the University of Chicago with a degree in chemical engineering.
Thayil has been in music since he was 12, when he started writing lyrics. His love for music lasted until high school, when he met Hiro Yamamoto. Thayil School is located at Rich East High School in Park Forest.

Kim Thayil formed his first band while living in Chicago in 1977. The band performed both original and cover songs.
