King Charles’ “Hot Cavalry” Lieutenant Colonel Jonny Thompson is still on royal duty – and made a rare appearance on Christmas Day!
Thompson — who opted for a behind-the-scenes role after the huge amount of attention he received for his good looks — joined the royal family for their annual walk on December 25 after St Mary Magdalene Church in Sandringham. In this clip, Thompson can be seen walking behind Kate Middleton wearing flower bracelets as the Princess of Wales, 42, wishes members of the crowd a Merry Christmas.

Last February, Thompson – who became known as the “hot equerry” and “Major Eye Candy” and became an internet sensation after King Charles took the throne in September 2022 – moved to a new, less public role, The Times reported. A palace source told the publication that Thompson “remains a senior groom to the King and Queen, in an executive and less public role.”
The Times added that “it is understood that Thompson did not enjoy the public attention he received after attending several high-profile events with the king.”
Thompson went viral on social media just days after the death of Queen Elizabeth on September 8, 2022, and the frenzy only intensified after the coronation of King Charles in May 2023. Thompson is a member of the 5th Battalion of the Royal Regiment of Scotland and rose through the ranks to become the most senior bodyguard of Queen Elizabeth. He was promoted to Super Equerry of King Charles after her death over two years ago, Tatler reported.

While Thompson has indeed been mostly behind the scenes since his role change in February, he was seen at Easter services with the royal family this spring and made headlines in October when it was announced that he had gotten engaged to Olivia Lewis, a PR executive Thompson reportedly met working for King Charles and Queen Camilla. Mail on Sunday reported that the couple are reportedly “well matched and very happy.”
