Salim Durani (1934-2006) was an Indian Test cricket player. He passed away on April 2, 2023, after a battle with cancer.

Salim Aziz Durani was born in Afghanistan on Tuesday, December 11, 1934 (age 88; death). When Salim started playing cricket, he used to play the ball with both hands. He was once a left-arm medium-fast bowler and a right-arm off-spinner. His father, who was also his first cricket coach, did not advocate bowling with two hands and sought advice from Venu Mankad; Venu suggested that Salim be allowed to bowl only left-handed and tied from behind His right hand to improve his left arm spin bowling. Later, he was selected for the school team to compete in the intercollegiate Hill Shield tournament.

His parents and grandfather were from Kabul, Afghanistan, and moved to Jamnagar, Gujarat in the early 1930s; his sister and her husband moved to Bangladesh. His father’s name is Abdul Aziz Durrani. He is a cricketer and coach. His mother’s name is unknown. Salim Durani has two sisters, Meenu and Nigar, and a brother, Jahangir Durani. Nigar was a teacher at St. Ann’s High School in Jamnagar, Gujarat. Abdul Aziz played several unofficial Test matches for India as a wicketkeeper between 1935 and 1936; he also played for Sind and Nawanagar in the Ranji Trophy between 1932 and 1938 Keepers and batsmen. The then Jam Sahib, Sir Digvijaysinhji Ranjitsinhji Jadeja, was impressed with Aziz Durani’s wicketkeeping and batting performance for the Nawanagar team during the Ranji Trophy. Visited Karachi in 1935 and offered him a job as Deputy Inspector. In 1947, after the partition of India, his father left him and his family and moved to Karachi where he lived for the rest of his life. Later, Aziz Durrani became a cricket coach and trained many cricketers including Pakistani player Hanif Mohammad.

Salim Durani represents Saurashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan and Central Region in domestic competitions. In 1949, due to his outstanding performance in the school team, he was selected for the All Saurashtra Inter-School Championship. Later, he was named in the government school team for the All-India Inter-School Championship in Calcutta (1949); this was Salim’s first match at Eden Gardens and he won every innings of the match Took six wickets. Salim Durani made his Test debut against Australia in Bombay on January 1, 1960; he was 24 when he made his Test debut. In 1961, Salim was selected for the India team for the series against England (1961-1962); he took eight wickets in the first match at Kolkata and the next at the Corporation Stadium in Chennai Ten wickets were taken in the match. The Indian team won a historic 2-0 victory over the visiting team, and Durrani’s outstanding performance was widely praised by the media. Although Salim performed well on the West Indies tour, he was dropped after the third Test against the West Indies and was not selected for the 1971 tour of England. In 1972, he was selected for the Test series against England (1972-1973) and scored a half-century in the second innings; India won that match and drew level with the visitors (1-1). In the third game of the series, he scored 38 runs per innings; however, he injured his knee and was ruled out of the fourth Test match. He played in India’s final Test match against England in Bombay in February 1973; he scored 73 in the first innings and 37 in the second as India won the five-match series 2-1 race. In an international Test career that spanned 13 years, Salim played 29 matches for India. He scored 1,202 runs, including 7 fifties and 1; he also took 75 wickets, including 3 five-wickets.
