Moms will be moms, even if they’re celebrities.
In a new interview with PEOPLE, Kris Jenner, 69, admits she used to sneak into her daughter Kourtney’s home while she was gone because she didn’t think she smelled “clean enough.”
“Kourtney started using plant-based products years ago, things that were natural and organic,” Jenner explains, adding that she grew up in a generation where if it was clean, it smelled like chemicals.
“I grew up believing that the stronger the smell, the cleaner it was, so I’d go over to her house, but it didn’t smell the way my house smells,” she says, noting, “I’m kind of a clean freak.”

Jenner says she would go to her oldest child’s home armed with her paper towels and a bottle of all-purpose cleaner to get the job done.
“Kourtney would go on vacation and I’d sneak over to her house and take all my strong products and clean her house, thinking she’d never know,” she says.
Of course, Kourtney, 45, found out – and Jenner says she knows better now.
The mom-of-six is the co-founder of Safely home, which includes plant-based cleaners, laundry detergents and soaps that don’t contain harsh chemicals, and says she understands that your home doesn’t have to smell like bleach or ammonia, be dirt-free and germ-free.
“When I started using them, it was a whole different thing because I assumed things that were natural or better for you wouldn’t clean well. But they do.” It doesn’t even lack a chemical smell.
“We just launched holiday fragrances, and I’m such a holiday girl, so I was excited about these,” she says of the limited edition release. (Safely products are currently available in Gingerbread Chai, Forest Pine and Cranberry Jubilee.)

Jenner notes that she now listens to Kourtney when it comes to other things.
“Kourtney even made me throw away my plastic products and cooking containers that were [covered in chemicals]. So we went through this journey together. She really taught me a lot about protecting your family when it comes to household products, and I finally paid attention.”

As for her obsession with cleanliness? She’s been like that since she can remember.
“My whole life,” she affirms. “Even when I was very young, it was very important to me that things were in order. I had six children when I was very young, so I always wanted everything to be in order. I’m a perfectionist and a control freak. I just wanted everything to be be the way I wanted.”
