Kyle Cooke Defends Vacation at Mexico Resort Where Carl Radke and Lindsay Hubbard Planned to Wed (Exclusive) 

After Lindsay Hubbard and Carl Radke called off their November wedding in Mexico, some of their Summer house Costars decided to travel anyway.

Kyle Cooke, who was one of them, tells PEOPLE that enough of the former couple’s friends wanted to enjoy the getaway that it just made sense to go.

“Carl worked with the venue and gave everyone a chance to get their money back, but there were enough people who took time off work, put those dates aside and looked forward to it,” explains Cooke.

“When the critical mass started coming together like 30 friends, I mean we’re just like, ‘This is going to be a great time. It is an adults only resort. All included. Why not??'”, he adds.

Cooke says it was sometime in September that he and the other Bravo stars on the guest list of the canceled wedding started texting each other asking, “Should we still go?”

In addition, he adds, this is not the first time this has been done.

“I know of friends where they have weddings [been] recalled and people did just that,” he says. “They went anyway. If it was a destination wedding and people are already taking days off work or buying plane tickets, hopefully it won’t be seen as disrespectful. It turned the wedding into a vacation.”

During the weekend of Radka and Hubbard’s scheduled wedding, Cooke and his Summer house Costar Gabby Prescod posted Instagram stories from their vacation at Hotel Unico 20°87° Riviera Maya, as well as Vanderpump Rules star Scheana Shay and her husband Brock Davies. Carl’s mother, Sharon Radke, and stepfather, Lou, also joined the group.

Cooke shared footage of himself at the club with Shay, Davies and Prescod. Prescod, who joined Summer house for Season 7 earlier this year, was also seen enjoying cocktails on the beach.

In a photo posted by Shay, she and Cooke pose with Carl’s mum Sharon and her husband Lou, whom she married in 2020.

Shay had previously said that she would still go on the trip during the conversation with Summer house alum Hannah Berner and current cast member Paige DeSorbo on the Oct. 6 episode of her podcast, Scheananigans.

– I’m still going – she said. “We didn’t go on our honeymoon, and when we got the email saying, ‘If you all still want to go, go,’ I texted Kyle and Amanda [Batula, Cooke’s wife]and they say, ‘We’re still going.'”

Carl and Hubbard officially called off their wedding in September, after getting engaged in August 2022.

In a letter to family and friends obtained by PEOPLE, Carl announced the news and apologized for any confusion or inconvenience the change of plans may have caused.

“Words cannot describe how difficult the last two weeks have been for Lindsay and I,” he wrote. “We are incredibly sorry to all of our guests for the confusion and lack of communication. We are left trying to figure out exactly how this all happened before we could even have a chance to determine a way forward between us.”

“There have been many false stories and misunderstandings that have made this even more painful, but unfortunately we are not going ahead with the wedding at this time,” he continued.

“The fact of the matter is that Lindsay is devastated and I am devastated that this has all happened. I am kindly asking for some patience and grace as we heal and recover as we go through this extremely difficult time.”

Earlier this week, Radke told PEOPLE that he has remained single since his engagement ended.

“I don’t feel like it’s responsible or fair to try to start a new relationship when there are still some entanglements, and [we’re] to have to relive the interruption publicly on TV,” said Radke. “Personally, I think it’s best for me to take a little more time, really focus on myself, my career, my family, my friendships. I think as I continue to work on it, something will happen on the dating side.”

For her part, Hubbard says she’s focused on moving forward.

“I’m very focused right now and I’m very busy right now,” Hubbard told PEOPLE. “I think after all is said and done, after last year, I thought my future in life was going to go in a completely different direction this year. Then, when it didn’t, I decided to focus on my individual successes and what I consider personal success in of my life. That was fine.”

One of those personal successes comes in the form of her new Nashville rental property, the Hubb House, which she unveiled exclusively to PEOPLE on Thursday.
