Kyle Richards and Mauricio Umansky Are Taking a 'Break' from Therapy But Remain 'Good Friends' amid Separation

Almost nine months after announcing their split, Kyle Richards is updating fans on her current relationship with husband Mauricio Umansky.

During a joint Amazon Live session with her daughter Alexia Umansky on Monday, The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star, 55, revealed that she and the agency’s founder are no longer seeking counselors for their marriage.

“We’re just taking a break from it,” she said. “But we get along really well and are really good friends.”

In July 2023, a source told PEOPLE that the couple had been “separated for some time” but remained “cozy as they figure out what’s next for them and their family.” Shortly after news of their split broke, Richards and Umansky denied rumors they were divorcing, but admitted they had a “tough year” in a statement they shared on Instagram.

The couple first met in 1994 and married in January 1996. They have daughters Alexia, 27, Sophia, 24, and Portia, 16, as well as Richards’ eldest daughter Farrah Brittany, 35 (née Aldjufrie) from her first marriage to ex Guraish Aldjufria.

In season 13 RHOBHthe pair were candid about going to couples therapy and even admitted that counseling was a “great comfort.”

“I thought it was important to go to couples therapy because the harder things were between us, the harder it was to communicate,” Richards told the cameras, before Umansky revealed their sessions were “fun” and allowed him to be “more in tune with yourself.”

When his admission rubbed Richards the wrong way, he clarified, “All I’m saying is this helps us. I think we’re a better place in some ways.”

Umansky continued, “We’ve been married for 27 years. We’ve never had so much going on in our lives. I think it got tough. Right? It got really tough.”

Despite their best efforts, Richards revealed that the problems in their marriage worsened over time and that the split, which she thought would be “temporary”, came about during the last installment RHOBH season 13 reunion

“In any marriage, there are problems that you have and they come up,” she said, explaining how their preoccupations with work and raising children pushed their problems aside instead of solving them. “Some problems never went away and were never really worked on.”

“I care about my family first and I mean I tried, I really tried,” she continued through tears. “And then when I couldn’t, the things that I was with – I don’t want to say that I was putting up with them, but you know, it just became more apparent to me.”

“I guess I couldn’t do it anymore. I finally hit the breaking point, but I was really thinking [our marriage] would come back,” Richards added. “I thought, ‘OK, this is just a temporary thing,’ and it wasn’t.”
