La. Ganesan is an Indian politician and social activist. In 2016, he was nominated as a member of the Federal Assembly of Madhya Pradesh. He is famous for becoming the 17th Governor of Manipur. In July 2022, he was appointed as the acting governor of West Bengal.

La. Ganesan was born on Friday 16 February 1945 (age 77; as of 2022) in Tanjore District, Madras District, British India (now Thanjavur District, Tamil Nadu State, India). In 1960, La. Ganesan completed his education from Veera Raghava High School, Thanjavur. After completing his studies, La Ganesan was unable to continue his higher education due to the sudden death of his father, and he had to take on the responsibilities of his family.

La. Ganesan worked as a Revenue Settlement Inspector (RSI) in the Revenue Department of the Tamil Nadu State Government after the death of his father. After nine years in the Revenue Department, La. Ganesan resigned from his post and joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in Tamil Nadu as a pracharak. He started joining the RSS at a very young age as his family was deeply involved in the spread of Sangh ideology. In 1975, when the Indian government declared a state of emergency in the country, Lal Ganesan was appointed leader of an underground movement that aimed to protect the country’s democracy against the then-led Indian government of Indira Gandhi. Due to his involvement in many underground movements, in 1975, he was placed on the wanted list of the Tamil Nadu police force and had to go into hiding for more than a year. In 1978, La. Ganesan was appointed as the regional chief of the RSS in Tamil Nadu for his contribution to the organization. In 1979, he was appointed as the district chief of RSS in Tamil Nadu. In 1981, La. Ganesan collaborated with the RSS to protect the interests of Hindus against the mass religious conversion in the town of Meenakshipuram, where more than a thousand Dalits converted to Islam. La. Ganesan played a vital role in resolving the issues that led to communal riots in Mandaikkadu in March 1982. His role in the riots was admired by many national leaders. In 1991, while serving as co-organizer of RSS in Tamil Nadu, La. Ganesan was asked to quit the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to help the growth of the party. As a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party, Lal Ganesan worked to take the party from the grassroots to strength in Tamil Nadu. He rose through the ranks of the party over the years and served as its organizational secretary, national secretary, vice-president and national president of Tamil Nadu. From 1991 to 2021, Lal Ganesan served as a member of the party’s National Executive Committee. La. Ganesan contested the 2009 and 2014 Tamil Nadu Lok Sabha elections but lost. In October 2016, La. Ganesan was nominated to the Madhya Pradesh Assembly for his social activities. He remained a member of Congress until the end of 2018.

“Sacrifice the country”
In 2017, farmers in Neduvasal village in Tamil Nadu protested against an ONGC project. ONGC has earmarked a ten-kilometre area in the village to extract natural elements such as methane and hydrocarbons. The areas marked by the company include farmers’ ancestral lands. In 2017, La. Ganesan, as a parliamentarian, made controversial remarks supporting ONGC’s extraction of natural elements. He said,
There is nothing wrong in sacrificing the country for its welfare. ”
Ganesan’s statement was not satisfactory.
Attack on BJP chief
In 2020, La. Ganesan was accused of verbally and physically attacking Kirupanidhi, the first Dalit president of the Bharatiya Janata Party, at the 2003 national party conference in Indore. Kirubanidhi alleged that there was a heated argument over the use of party funds, during which Lal Ganesan lost his cool and hurled casteist slurs against the party president. Kirubanidhi also claimed that when he tried to stop La Ganesan from abusing him, La Ganesan twisted his arms behind his back and physically assaulted him while he tried to comfort him. When describing the incident, he said,
My term is coming to an end. I have to submit my accounts. I found many irregularities in the use of party funds. Even after Ganesan was promoted to national secretary, he continued to handle the party’s state funds. When I stopped him from doing this, he got angry, resented me, and attacked me. He could not digest the fact that Dalits were in leadership positions. After that incident, I quit the party and joined the DMK. ”
