This Valentine’s Day, director Todd Phillips celebrates the love between Joker: Folie á Deuxcriminal couple.
Phillips, 53, took to Instagram to share three new photos of Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga getting close as their characters, Arthur Fleck, also known as the Joker, and Dr. Harleen Quinzel, also known as Harley Quinn.
In one image, Phoenix, 49, is seen in the Joker’s signature make-up as he stands next to Gaga, 37, who is wearing a muted version of Harley Quinn’s mismatched red and blue make-up.
The next photo shows Gaga smiling as she touches her nose to Phoenix’s as they stand face to face on set. Phoenix stares into his costar’s eyes, but barely cracks a smile at their close-up encounter.
The final image shows a fictional couple dancing in each other’s arms. They are seen on Folie á Deux set, where Phoenix dunks Gaga as they slow dance.
“I hope your day is full of love. 10.4.24,” Phillips wrote in the caption, including the film’s release date.

During Valentine’s Day last year, the director shared one of the first looks at the sequel, posting the first photo of Gaga alongside Phoenix. Since then, Phillips has been sparing in sharing photos of the upcoming feature.
In April 2023, he shared two images of the film’s leads and announced that production had been completed. “That’s the end,” he wrote. “Thanks to these two (+ the entire cast) and the BEST crew the film industry has to offer. From top to bottom. Now I’m going to crawl into the (room arrangement) cave and put it all together.”
Phillips recently celebrated the holiday season by treating curious fans to two more images from the film. The first image shows Phoenix imprisoned in what is presumably his Arkham Asylum cell — which is where he was placed in the final scene Joker. In another picture, Phoenix is seen as Gaga looks towards him in another picture.
Folie á Deux premiered on October 4, the fifth anniversary of the release of the first film. When Phillips marked the fourth anniversary of the first film in October, he shared a picture of Phoenix standing in the rain surrounded by various colored umbrellas.
“Four years ago we had a good ride. Lots of great memories. More to come,” he wrote at the time.

Joker set box office records upon release in 2019. A sequel has been officially confirmed for June 2022. That same month, PEOPLE confirmed that Gaga is in talks to play Harley Quinn.
