Lamorne Morris Struggled with ‘Wild Bout of Depression’ During New Girl’s Iconic Prince Episode 

Lamorne Morris says he was going through a depressive episode when Prince made his famous cameo on the 2014 episode. New girl — saying it was “my favorite” episode, but was the “worst episode to shoot” because of his own struggles.

“I just remember doing the scene, then getting into my trailer and just crying for no reason. ‘Wow. Man, why am I like that’ — everything was going great. It was like everything was going great,” Morris, 41, said during an appearance on the Nov. 5 episode. Crushed.

Morris — who played Winston’s favorite goofball New girl — he shared at the time that “business was going great. Everyone in my family was healthy. It was like, ‘What am I complaining about?’ ”

“I didn’t know. I couldn’t connect it to anything,” he said, sharing how his girlfriend at the time “helped clean up my diet. She started cooking for me – only healthy food, and in the morning she made me juice, fresh juice and things like that.”

Morris — who won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series for Fargo this year — he shared that he started going hiking and being more active, “and before I knew it, those [depressive] days are gone.”

“When I cleaned up my diet, the mood changed,” said Morris, who starred in the sequel New girl until he finished his seven-year work in 2018.

Morris shared that with his personal struggles behind him, he can look back fondly on working with Prince, who died just two years after appearing on New girl at 57

“There was so much hype around it and so much mystique around it. And when you meet him, you say, ‘I understand why. This man enlightens. And there are so many tassels and zippers.’ ”

“He was so nice – that was the most impressive part. He was so nice and just gentle and very, like, kind and gentle in the way he would talk to people,” Morris said. “It was a really cool experience.”

In the October episode of her podcast A mess aroundMorris’ colleague Hannah Simone said Prince wanted to join New girl because he was in love with her. “He tried for a long time to find a way for us to be in the same room together,” said Simone (44) in an interview with New girl costume designer Debra McGuire.
