Lana Del Rey and her siblings – sister Caroline and brother Charlie – come from a creative family.

The “Video Games” singer, born Elizabeth Grant, and her siblings, Caroline “Chuck” Grant and Charlie Hill-Grant, were raised in upstate New York by their parents, Robert Grant and Patricia Ann Hill. The couple celebrated the arrival of Del Rey in 1986, followed by Caroline in 1989 and Charlie in 1993.

Although the singer is nominated for a Grammy, her sister and brother have also taken creative paths.

Caroline is a photographer living in Los Angeles and New York. She was once called “one to watch”. Vogue Australia and her photographs have been published in various publications including Complex, Fader, New York Magazine, Rolling Stone and Vice. Meanwhile, Charlie is a director who has been making content for Del Rey in recent years.

Del Rey often collaborates with her siblings on album visuals or magazine covers. In an interview with November 2023 Harper’s Bazaar, she opened up about their relationship, explaining that Charlie uses a room in his house as an office, while Caroline often visits.

“We process things as a family. He is never alone,” she explained. “Some nights I’m alone, but not really. We’re on the same page. We are always on the same side.”

Del Rey was born in Manhattan, but she and her family moved to Lake Placid, New York when she was a child.

Although she has spoken about misconceptions about her childhood and her parents’ wealth, including in a December 2023 interview. The Sunday Times, she and her siblings agreed that their humble upbringing has provided inspiration over the years.

In the story for November 2013 NYLONCaroline stated that growing up in a summer resort (Lake Placid is the hub of winter sports) encouraged the sisters to appreciate the revival of the American dream through visual content.

For NYLON in October 2014, Del Rey interviewed her younger sister about her career and inspirations, revealing that Caroline had been photographing her for a decade at that point.

“She captures what I consider the visual equivalent of what I do sonically,” Del Rey said. “Even years ago, when she was just starting out, she seemed to have a reason and a vision for every shot.”

“The Summertime Sadness” singer continued, “Now, after meeting so many famous photographers, her aesthetic and talent still stand out as one of the most interesting and developed.”

The siblings’ father, Rob, also gave an interview to Dazed that Caroline photographed the album cover for his debut record, Lost at sea and a shot of the campaign.

Charlie is also a creative person

Caroline isn’t the only Del Rey sibling showing her artistic side and working on projects.

Besides working with his sister, his father shared with Dazed that Charlie helped shoot the music video for his song “Lost at Sea”.

Rob described him as “very clever” and “very creative”, adding: “I think Charlie is still searching in a way. He’s the youngest.”

Del Rey also shares a musical bond with her sister. In an interview from July 2023 DazedRob said Caroline has a “lovely voice”.

“When she was young she did a lot of school plays, we have all the old VHS tapes,” he said. “I mean, you should hear Chuck’s voice. But she went in a different direction.”

The sisters sang like children while their father played the piano. He recalled those sweet moments from his childhood in his interview with face, saying that “the girls would stand by the piano and sing.”

“They would just hum or make up their own words,” he added.

Caroline Says Lana Del Rey Is Her “Muse”

Over the years, Caroline has been heavily involved in her sister’s visuals, including early photos for Del Rey’s songs “Ride” and “National Anthem”. She was also the mind behind Del Rey’s album covers Honeymoon, Lust for life, Norman the fucking Rockwell and others.

In April 2013, Caroline even called her sister her “muse” in an interview with Complex.

“My sister, Lana Del Rey, is perhaps my most influential muse,” she said. “We collaborated on countless shoots, often obsessed with the same subjects, but interested in them for different reasons.”

In April 2017, Caroline shared The New York Times that the feeling is mutual. She explained, “We inspire each other to keep reaching for the new artistic places we go, but we also remind each other of our roots in our individual crafts.”

The singer explored her “family of origin” on her 2023 album Did you know there is a tunnel under Ocean Blvd, as revealed in an interview with Billboard.

Specifically, in her song “Fingertips,” Del Rey addresses her sister and brother. Overall, she also names several family members in the album, including her father, grandfather and uncle.

Del Rey explained, “On this album, I have to finalize my thoughts and get super specific, which I wasn’t really comfortable with before.”
