Grey’s Anatomy: Meredith Is Blackmailed, Jo’s Secret Is Exposed and Bailey’s Fate Is Revealed in Season 21 Premiere

The doctors at Gray Sloan Memorial faced the consequences of Meredith Grey’s (Ellen Pompeo) secret research that was revealed in the season 21 premiere Grey’s Anatomy.

The September 26 episode opened with Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson) standing up to Catherine after she threatened to fire the interns.

After Bailey asked if she was replaceable, Catherine replied, “Do you know how many doctors I’ve replaced in my career? Your denials may stand, but your salary will pay for the lawyers to correct their mistakes. You’re done here, Dr. Bailey. Goodbye.”

“You can’t fire me. You don’t deserve to fire me,” Bailey told her, but Catherine shot back, “You think you’re God’s gift to this hospital. Please, they won’t even notice as soon as you walk out that door. You’re just another doctor.”

That harsh comment led to Bailey slapping her across the face.

The explosive moment turns out to have been a dream, but Bailey is still fired from the hospital along with fellow surgeons Teddy Altman (Kim Raver), Amelia Shepherd (Caterina Scorsone) and Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd), while Meredith quits after the scandal .

Bailey faces a new reality

Catherine wasted no time in replacing Bailey with a new full-time director, but managed to remain in charge of her reproductive health clinic.

With her husband, Ben Warren (Jason George), she is looking for a new job after leaving the Seattle Fire Department, after completing Station 19he showed his devotion to the woman. “I’m not going to report to any Fox [Foundation] hospital,” he declared. “Catherine let you go. I don’t believe her and you wanted to slap her. I heard a rumor that the new residence hall director is starting today.”

The new residency director was Sydney Heron (returning guest star Kali Rocha) and she used her signature loving and caring approach…much to the surprise – and dislike – of the interns.

When Bailey tried to go unnoticed while sneaking around the hospital, Sydney saw her and immediately gave her a bear hug. “Isn’t this fun?” she said. “A new generation of doctors alongside our generation of doctors. We all work together to make the world a better place.”

The interaction angered Bailey, who later told her husband, “Her philosophy is to heal with love. Love does not heal. Science heals. Medicine and trained doctors heal… She took my interns when I was pregnant and slowed them down with positivity, smiles and butterflies… I’m the one who got those residents back in shape.”

Simone Griffin’s (Alexis Floyd) frustrations with Sydney continued to mount as they searched for the missing patient at the hospital, but Bailey told them that it was no longer her problem.

“It should be,” Simone replied. “Why don’t you fight for your job? Is it so easy to leave after everything you’ve been through with us? Why don’t you bang on the door?”

After the patient was found in a supply closet wall and rushed into surgery, Bailey further explained her stance to Simone, saying, “I did fight, putting my job on the line for all of you. That was me fighting. What happened is not your fault. You can’t carry everyone’s choices on your shoulders… you always know where to find me.”

Meredith and Catherine face off

After Catherine revealed that Meredith had embezzled funds for her Alzheimer’s research in the season 20 finale, the Fox Foundation lifted the ban. The messenger informed her, “If you don’t answer, you could be charged with contempt of court.” However, she immediately threw the papers in the trash.

Amidst the fallout, Jackson Avery (Jesse Williams) returned to Gray Sloan Memorial and asked his mother if she had spoken to Meredith after the discovery. Catherine retorted, “I won’t talk to that authorized firebender that we were the last two people left on this earth and it was the only way to save civilization.”

Meredith later insisted to Jackson that the legal ramifications—including cease-and-desist letters from Catherine—had prevented other institutions from wanting to work with them on research. Jackson retorted: “Are these people aware of the misuse of funds? Break the contract? That you signed a non-compete? I’m not here to make things easy for you. I was also the source of those letters.”

“This is not just about my mom. I brought you in so I could participate in revolutionary work… You have no idea how big you two are,” he told her later. “Catherine broke more rules than all of us, but she was strategic about it. She figured out how to play the game .”

Meredith noted that she had “no time for games” but wanted Amelia, Owen, and Teddy to get their jobs back. She told Jackson, “I’ll sell a percentage of my Gray Sloan stock and I can pay you all back.”

“This is not about money,” Jackson insisted. “No longer.”

Meredith went to Catherine to resolve their disagreement, but collapsed before they could talk. Meredith realized that Catherine’s cancer was progressing and that she needed further treatment. However, Catherine revealed: “I don’t do any invasive treatments.”

Meredith then asked if she knew about the tumor on her spine, to which Catherine replied, “I know about it, but Richard and Jackson don’t, and you won’t tell them.”

Meredith told Catherine that Jackson and Richard needed to know about her condition, and she replied, “I’ll tell them when I’m ready.”

“Do you know how much work it takes to plan your death?” she shared. »And I’m not just talking about choosing a coffin or drawing up a will. I’m talking about evaluating your life and making sure you’ve done everything you want with it. I think about this every day, and when I think about it, I know two things. My family is perfect, especially my grandson, and I’m not ready to sit around [the] margins.”

Meredith tried to remind her of her “remarkable” career, but Catherine told her to “shut up.” She asked what if he didn’t, and Catherine replied, “Then you and your friends will never get your jobs back.”

“You’re threatening me about your health,” Meredith retorted, and Catherine replied, “I’ve blackmailed people over much less.”

Meredith later informed Jackson and Amelia Shepherd (Caterina Scorsone) that “everyone can get their jobs back,” but when asked if she would continue the research, she replied, “Yes, I will, but not here.”

Amelia clarified what she meant and Meredith said, “You should get yours in Seattle and the research will go in a different direction.”

After it was revealed that Jo Wilson (Camilla Luddington) was pregnant in the season 20 finale, she struggled with how to tell her boyfriend, Atticus “Link” Lincoln (Chris Carmack).

“I keep trying to tell him that everybody got fired and it felt weird celebrating something … and I’m afraid of how he’s going to react and I’m afraid of how I’m going to react to his reaction,” she told her. friend Levi Schmitt (Jake Borelli).

Later, while discussing his career with Link, Schmitt almost let the news slip when he said, “You’re going to be a good dad.” Link was confused and quickly replied, “I already am.”

However, Link put the pieces of the puzzle together when Jo refused the fries and wine at the bar. “Are you? are we?” he asked, as she shook her head yes.

He was very happy and the couple hugged.
