Lance Bass Jokes *NSYNC Would’ve Released New Music a ‘Lot Quicker’ If They’d Had a ‘Drag Out Fight’ Like Other Groups

There’s no breaking that *NSYNC bond — but it might have been worth it for the new music.

Months after the boyband reunited to release a track for the latest Trolls movie, Lance Bass reflected on *NSYNC’s longtime friendship after their 2004 split.

“[It] it’s always confused me,” Bass, 44, said of the times other boy bands get into big fights. “Like, ‘Well, why did it take us so long to actually do another song?’ Because all those other groups that actually hate each other have been making music forever. How did they do it?”

He joked: “I’m like, ‘Well, maybe we should have had a knockdown, a long fight. Maybe we should have rallied a lot faster.'”

*NSYNC released their first single in over 20 years, titled “Better Place,” in September for Trolls Band Together. In November, the group – which includes Justin Timberlake, JC Chasez, Joey Fatone and Chris Kirkpatrick – walked the red carpet together at the Los Angeles premiere.

While the “Bye Bye Bye” band has reunited in the past — teaming up for their 2018 Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony and in honor of Timberlake’s Video Vanguard Award at the 2013 MTV VMAs — this is the first time they’ve dropped new music since the split.

As for the possibility of an upcoming tour, Bass told PEOPLE that they haven’t dismissed the idea.

“Because of this experience and seeing what the fans’ reactions were, it really pushed us to talk about something else. So now we’re talking. We’re just throwing out all kinds of ideas,” he says.

As for their relationship over the years, Bass said the band “always kept in touch” and “talked every week.”

“We’ve always been in each other’s lives for the last 25 years. It’s hard to see each other physically, especially all five of us. But this was nice to be able to all come together and do a fun project. Most of us being fathers means a lot more now,” he says.

Reuniting in the studio, he says, was like “riding a bike.”

“It was like no day had passed with all of us. We were back to being those teenagers telling stupid fart jokes and it was a really great experience. It just really brought us back to that nostalgic feeling,” he says. “And you forget how much you physically miss those guys just being around them. They’re my brothers for life. They’ll always be my family.”
