Larsa Pippen Reveals How She Secretly Communicated with Marcus Jordan While Filming The Traitors Season 2

“I think it’s super fun to experience this with someone you care about,” the Bravo star told PEOPLE of competing against her boyfriend

Larsa Pippen and boyfriend Marcus Jordan’s relationship will be put to the ultimate test as they clash on Traitors.

The The Real Housewives of Miami star, 49, and the former basketball player, 32, will compete for a $250,000 grand prize in the second season of the Peacock reality show when it premieres Friday.

“I kind of wanted to try,” Pippen tells PEOPLE of why she signed up for the Traitors. “I feel like all the things I did on Bravo were basically safe and this was a place that was far from safe, I didn’t know what the outcome was going to be, if I was going to be good or evil or what.”

Jordan joined Traitors because he considers himself “a big fan of murder mysteries.”

“Watching the first season, I was kind of hooked,” he says. “Then I also felt that all the content around the game was strictly focused on the game and didn’t intrude too much into your personal life. And that was a big attraction for me.”

With a lack of reality TV competition experience, Jordan wanted to learn as much as possible from his fellow cast members — who include past winners Big Brother, Challenge and Survived — when filming began in Scotland.

“My strategy is to be a sponge,” he says. “I think looking at the first season, if you go in too hot, it could work against you. And so, I felt like the first few days of understanding everybody and learning everybody’s personality really helped me develop my strategy going forward.”

Pippen says her strategy changed during the competition. “I started thinking I’m going to be super quiet and just take in all the information,” says the Bravo star. “And now I feel like I’m just friends with everyone.”

Pippen also hoped he wouldn’t have to “choose sides or have to throw somebody under the bus or I’m going to get killed.” But she felt ready for the physical aspect Traitorsdespite not coming from a competitive background.

“Marcus and I practice every day, so I feel like once we knew we were going to make it Traitors, we said, ‘Hey, we need to step up our cardio,'” she says. “We have to get used to not having our phones, which is a whole other aspect of this challenge. But I think when you deal with challenges, your adrenaline really kicks in and pushes you to the next level.”

As the son of NBA legend Michael Jordan, the reality star found himself in competition Traitors. “I’m Jordan in my DNA, so I feel like winning is in my blood,” he teases.

Jordan admits that playing with his girlfriend made navigating the game a bit more complicated. “I definitely feel like it’s a target on our back,” he says. “But I feel like I’m super lucky and fortunate to have my girlfriend here because it’s made the adjustment a lot easier.”

Pippen believes “our relationship has changed” thanks to it Traitors.

“We had to have this conversation and we’re basically like, ‘Hey, when we get to the castle, I’m Larsa and you’re Marcus and we’re not necessarily a duo anymore. You are alone. I’m on my own,’ Pippen continues. “I feel that we are both growing individually and this is our path. And I think it’s great fun to experience this with someone you care about, and at the same time be a challenge in your relationship.”

After recording in Traitors castle wrapped every day, Pippen and Jordan stayed the night in separate rooms where they could not communicate with each other.

“They give us pictures of everyone in the room so we understand everyone’s name,” Jordan explains. “And so I catch myself taking a picture of the head, looking at Larsa. As soon as it dawns, I rush downstairs because we are traveling in the same car. So I kind of take my mind out of the game trying to get back into it.”

Pippen found a secret way to communicate with Jordan while they were filming, although.

“Marcus asked me for a nail file, and I put it in a paper bag – and they check everything, you don’t have to send anything back and forth – but he wanted a nail file, and I said, I’ll just give him send a nail file,” she said. “And then I thought, oh, there’s a banana. He said he wanted a banana. Well I [write] ‘I love you’ on a banana and send it to him with a nail file.”

Jordan thought, “That was cute.”

Larsa Pippen says she ‘didn’t hang out’ with Michael Jordan after dating his son Marcus for nearly a year

Ultimately, being separated overnight during the shootout didn’t take its toll on Pippen and Jordan.

“Thank God, we have a solid relationship,” she says, “because we didn’t hang out at all.”

And if one of them ended up as a traitor and the other remained faithful, “there’s no anger,” says Jordan. “But I definitely feel like it’s going to sting a bit if Larsa stabs me in the back.”
