Lata Mangeshkar was born on Saturday, September 28, 1929, in Indore, Indore, British Central India (age 92; at time of death). Her birth name was “Hema” but was later renamed Lata by her parents after the female character Latika in one of her father’s plays “Bhaaw Bhandhan”. Lata has loved music since she was a child. On the first day of school, she started teaching the children to sing, and when the teacher intervened, she became so angry that she stopped going to school.
Lata got her first music lessons from her father Deenanath Mangeshkar. At the age of 5, she began acting in her father’s musicals. In 1942, when she was only 13, her father died of a heart attack. It was then that her father’s close friend Guru Vinayak took care of her family and helped Lata start a career as an actress and singer.

In 1942, Mangeshkar sang her first song “Naachu Yaa Gade, Khelu Saari Mani Haus Bhaari” for the Marathi film “Kitni Hasaal”. However, the song was removed from the final cut. She played a small role in Navyug Chitrapat’s Marathi film Pahili Mangalaa-gaur and made her debut with “Natali Chaitraachi Navalaai” in it. In 1943, she sang her first Hindi song “Mata Ek Sapoot Ki Duniya Badal De Tu” for the Marathi film “Gajaabhaau”.

On January 27, 1963, the patriotic song “Ae Mere Watan Ke Logon” sung by Mangeshkar during the Sino-Indian War moved the then Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and other dignitaries to tears. Lata has collaborated on several songs with famous male singers such as Kishore Kumar, Hemant Kumar, Mukesh, Mahendra Kapoor, Manna Dey and Mohammed Rafi. Her duets with Kishore Kumar like “Kora Kagaz”, “Tere Bina Zindagi Se” and “Aap Ki Aakhon Me” spelled some unforgettable musical magic. Apart from singing, she has also composed music for Marathi films Ram Ram Pavane, Maratha Tituka Melvana, Mohityanchi Manjula, Sadhi Manase and Tambadi Mati. In 2022, she tested positive for COVID-19 and also suffered from pneumonia. After recovering, she developed multiple COVID-19 complications and died of multiple organ failure on February 6, 2022, at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai. Many Indian celebrities including Shah Rukh Khan, Sachin Tendulkar and Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid their last respects to Lata Mangeshkar at the Shivaji Park Crematorium in Mumbai. Two days of national mourning followed in memory of the legendary singer.
