American discus thrower Laulauga Tausaga-Collins was born on May 22, 1998 in Hawaii. Her personal best of 69.49 meters earned her a gold medal at the 2023 World Championships in Athletics. She also won gold at the 2022 NACAC Championships.
Tausaga qualified for the women’s discus final at the 2019 World Championships and won silver medals in the discus at the 2019 Games and the 2019 NACAC U-23 Championships. Tausaga won the discus event at the 2017 Pan American U20 Athletics Championships.
Tausaga won the shot put championship for the CIF San Diego Section while representing Mount Miguel High School in 2014 and 2015, with throws of 13.53 m (44 ft 4+12 in) and 14.71 m (48 ft 3 in ). At the 2015 CIF California State meet, she placed third in the shot put event at 14.61 m (47 ft 11 in).

On Tuesday, Laulauga Tausaga shocked the world by breaking her personal best throw of more than four meters to win gold in the discus just as Team USA’s Valarie Allman appeared to be racing to victory.
Tausaga, who was last in the previous two world finals, had the best result of 65.46 meters, but managed to throw 69.49 meters with her fifth throw. She then ran into the crowd to join her fans in celebration.
Tausaga stated, “I couldn’t do something tonight that I didn’t think was possible. Tausaga remarked, “I don’t know if I have a fairy godmother or if my ancestors had something.”
“I was confident that if I was at my peak, I could sneak into a medal and not finish 12th like I did at the last two world championships,” said the competitor. I still find it hard to believe that I deserved a gold medal. I knew how far apart we were, but I just couldn’t get to my coach fast enough to give him the biggest hug of my life.

Unlike Eugene, Allman proved her dominance in Budapest with a first-round throw of 68.57, which was more than any of her rivals had managed all year. She improved her scores to 68.79 in the third round and 69.23 in the fourth before her teammate intervened, and appeared to be heading for gold.
Tausaga, a native of Hawaii, set a personal best of 65.56, but it wasn’t all that significant as it kept her in sixth place at the halfway mark.
Allman missed her last chance to get back into the lead on Tausage’s last throw, allowing her native to land the winning throw, which she did while wiping tears from her face.
I still can’t believe it, so I can’t tell you what it means right now, Tausaga said. I struggle to articulate my feelings. It’s great. Allman apologized and also expressed her displeasure in her co-star.
“To say I wanted to win tonight is an understatement,” Allman said. “I trained incredibly hard and did my best to win. It’s challenging when you’re in fantastic shape but can’t take home the gold.
