Taylor Swift’s friendship with Laura Dern hits different!

At the Environmental Media Association awards ceremony on Saturday, Jurassic Park actress and award-winner, 56, spoke exclusively with PEOPLE — and when asked what she, as a friend, might know about Swift that her fans might not get a chance to experience, Dern shared a candid answer.

“She cares deeply about everything,” Dern tells PEOPLE of Swift, 34, adding, “and I think the people who love her know that.”

She continues, “They know it in her writing and they know it in her heart and her activism — but it was amazing to know that as a friend as well.”

Despite her close friendship with Swift, Dern responded diplomatically when asked if she would support the Kansas City Chiefs in their AFC Championship game against the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday. (The Chiefs are, of course, the team of the “Blank Space” singer’s boyfriend, tight end Travis Kelce.)

“Oh, that’s a complicated answer. I don’t have an answer,” he explains, before adding: “Maybe I have a reason to root for everyone.”

Dern also opened up about what first got her into the wider environmental movement, specifically supporting a famous friend.

“My mom early as a child and her amazing friends, some of whom are here tonight, who I had the privilege of learning from at a young age,” she says, adding, “And the amazing Ted Danson, who was a huge inspiration with his work at Oceana. So much People [who] they really guided me and taught me so much.”
