Lauryn Hill Performs Classic The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill Songs with Son YG Marley at 2024 BET Awards

Lauryn Hill and her son, YG Marley, turned the 2024 BET Awards into another family reunion.

On Sunday, June 30, the mother-son duo performed together at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, as Hill, 49, opened her performance with a heartfelt rendition of “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill” — the title track from her 1998 cult album The Album.

Wearing a high-waisted black dress, yellow cape, sunglasses and glittery headpiece, the Grammy winner performed her first song before segueing into her single “Lost Ones” in front of a cheering crowd, who happily sang along to the track from her R&B classic, the record influenced by reggae. Hill also appeared to freestyle with a rousing verse about activism and equality — similar to her performance in May at tonight’s show, which included her son Marley.

Soon after, the artist’s son – who is also the grandson of reggae icon Bob Marley – hit the stage to perform his recently released single “Survival”. The song, which includes a songwriting credit by Hill and uses an interpolation of his grandfather’s 1979 song “Ambush in the Night”, then transitioned into a rendition of his 2023 song “Praise Jah in the Moonlight”.

Hill’s Fugees bandmate Wyclef Jean then joined the duo on stage to sing their 1995 rap song “Fu-Gee-La” to close out the awards ceremony in style.

Later this summer, the two will embark on an extension of Hill’s Miseducation Anniversary tour, which she postponed in November due to vocal issues. This time, the Fugees rhymer will reunite with his bandmates and co-headliners Wyclef Jean and Pras Michel, with Marley joining them as a special guest.

Hill announced the new tour dates on Monday, June 24, telling fans on social media, “The celebration continues…”

The announcement of the rescheduled tour comes nearly a year after the 25th anniversary of Hill’s debut album, which launched her to critical acclaim and has remained a seminal work ever since.

In May, Apple Music crowned Hill’s No. 1 album on its inaugural list of the 100 Greatest Albums of All Time and honored her with a special dinner. In a statement about the achievement, she said: “This is my award, but it is a rich, deep story and involves so many people, so much sacrifice, so much time and so much shared love.”
