Lenny Kravitz Explains How He and Lisa Bonet Co-Parented Daughter Zoë ‘Without Lawyers’ and ‘All That Madness’ (Exclusive)

For Lenny Kravitz and his ex-wife Lisa Bonet, family always came first.

Roker (59) was married to The Cosby Show alum, 56, from 1987 to 1993, and in 1988 they had a daughter, Zoë, who is now 35. In this week’s PEOPLE cover story, Kravitz talks about what it took to raise their daughter together and in harmony.

“I’m very proud not only of how Zoë came out, but how we pulled it off,” he says. “We did it without lawyers and all that madness. We did it as a family, with love.”

When it came to Zoë’s living arrangement, “it flowed naturally,” he says. “She had her years living with her mom, and when she was 11, she moved in with me until she went to college, and it worked out.”

One fond memory Kravitz has is taking 11-year-old Zoë as his date to the 2000 Grammys. “It was just a wonderful father-daughter night out together,” he says. “She had her own personal style. I loved taking my daughter with me. She was cool.”

However, she went a little crazy when she met the Spice Girls. “She loved the Spice Girls, and we were on the same label, and she met them, and they sat her on their lap. She was in heaven.”

As for co-parenting with Bonet, “We did it with understanding and being able to do our own thing without interference from others. That was Let Love Rule,” he says, referring to the title of his debut album, which was heavily inspired by Bonet. . “It’s when you remove the ego and all the other elements and do what you’re supposed to do.”
