He is an Irish politician who in June 2017 became the leader of the Fine Gael party and the first openly gay Taoiseach (prime minister) of Ireland. He has served as Leader of Fine Gael and as Taoiseach and Minister of Defense in the Government of Ireland since June 2017.
In the 2020 Irish general election, in which Fine Gael was returned as the third largest party behind Fianna Fáil and Sinn Féin. Varadkar resigned but remained in office as Acting Taoiseach until a successor was appointed. He has also been Teachta Dala (TD) for the Dublin West constituency since 2007.
