Capaldi added: “I still haven’t gotten around to it, but it’s interesting that this thing that you love to do and that you’ve always wanted to do becomes something that causes you such distress, but that’s the modern world.”

“I’m at a point right now where I can balance my mental health and how I feel in general… the trade-off is worth it,” he continued. “I’ll put up with a few panic attacks and my Tourette’s and stuff for what’s going on, but if it gets to the point where things get worse mentally and I stop taking care of myself in that regard, I think that would be the point where I’d say, ‘ I’m just not going to do it anymore’.”

Lewis Capaldi reveals he has Tourette syndrome: ‘It’s a new thing – I’m learning’

Capaldi first shared his diagnosis of Tourette’s Syndrome in 2022, after noticing that his shoulder was twitching frequently. He said in a September Instagram Live session that “it happens all the time.”

“The worst thing about it is when I’m excited I get it, when I’m stressed I get it, when I’m happy. It happens all the time,” Capaldi said of the involuntary twitches. “Some days it’s more painful than others, and some days it’s less. It looks a lot worse than it is. Sometimes it’s quite uncomfortable… but it comes and goes.”

According to the Mayo Clinic, Tourette syndrome is a disorder “that involves repetitive movements or unwanted sounds (tics) that cannot be easily controlled.”

Tics usually begin to manifest between the ages of 2 and 15, and males are three to four times more likely to develop the disorder than females.
