Liam, 31, texted Jodie on Monday and asked her what she was doing, to which she said she was at the gym with her son.

The singer replied “nice” before sharing a photo of him on the bed in his hotel room with his hand pressed to his forehead.

She replied “Sorry just go home x.”

On Wednesday morning, just hours before his death, Liam texted her again asking if she was awake.

Jodie later replied to him around 8am and the two texted each other as he told her he was “chilling” in Argentina.

Liam was in Buenos Aires on tour with his former bandmate Niall Horan when he died after falling from a third-floor hotel balcony on Wednesday afternoon.

His autopsy revealed the star had suffered severe injuries that led to “internal and external bleeding.”

Emergency services confirmed that he died immediately from multiple injuries, including a fractured skull.

Jodie told Sky News: “I’m really close to Liam, we’ve been friends for years and he was away in Argentina yesterday and I think he just wanted to touch base and make sure I was OK, see how everyone got home.

“We talk close enough every day and have for years. He’s obviously always been there every now and then when I needed him even though he’s not local.”

Speaking about his state of consciousness on the day he died, Jodie said: “He was looking forward to his day, he said he had a cold, nothing seemed out of the ordinary.

“He’s always somewhere more glamorous than us, so LA, Argentina, I have to look at the time difference to see where he is, he usually texts me and it’s the middle of the night.

“He seemed fine, he looked happy, he looked healthy – no cause for any concern, and then obviously I heard it on the news.”

Jodie said she “couldn’t believe it” when the news of his death broke late on Wednesday night.

She explained: “I thought it was fake news, I tried to call him. Apparently he didn’t pick up.

“I tried to send him a message, it wouldn’t go ‘read’ – normally he does it quite quickly, and then as I turned on the TV it became more and more obvious that it wasn’t fake.”

Jodie then texted Liam, saying: “Please tell me this isn’t true!”

“It’s a terribly lost life, he had a future ahead of him,” she added.

“It’s a real tragedy not only for us as friends and family but for the whole world that knows him as a celebrity and pop singer.

“Obviously he has a very supportive mum and dad, his two sisters, I know he speaks very highly of Cheryl [Tweedy]he has a girlfriend… there are enough people he can turn to and he would do it.

“He always got help if he needed it, but as far as I was concerned he was in a good place with everything that was going on in his personal life and career, he had new things on the horizon in television and he seemed happy.”

The former One Director member was said to be “acting strangely” shortly before his death, with witnesses claiming he had to be carried back to his room.

Argentine police said they were called to the hotel on Wednesday after staff reported an “aggressive man who may be under the influence of drugs or alcohol”.

Witnesses at the hotel reported that Liam smashed his laptop and even had to carry it back to the room,

The hotel’s front desk manager made two frantic calls to 911 and is heard saying: “We have a guest who is destroying everything in his room. We need someone to come.

“They must be in the room that has a balcony. And well, we’re a little worried that he’s going to do something, that he’s going to risk his life.”

911 Operator: “How long has it been there? Is it an extended stay hotel?”

Hotel manager: “(The guest) has been there for the last three days.”

911 Operator: “You don’t have any other information because you can’t get in. Right?”

Hotel manager: “No.”

911 operator: “We are also notifying SAME (Emergency Medical Services).”

Hotel manager: “Please send someone immediately because…”

Hotel manager: “I’m the desk manager.”

911 operator: “Person in charge of the location.”

Hotel manager – “Yes.”

911 operator: “It’s been notified. What’s your name, sir?”

911 operator: “Don’t worry because they’ve already been notified.”

Hotel manager: “Since he’s under the influence of alcohol and drugs, as you said, the SAME staff can’t go in alone.”

911 Operator: “You can ask the police about that, but if SAME needs them, they’ll let you know.”

Hotel manager: “Good, OK, perfect.”

911 operator: “Have a nice day.”
