Liam Payne’s “erratic behavior started to escalate” when Kate Cassidy left their holiday before his death on Wednesday, October 16, according to a source close to the late singer’s girlfriend.
“As you could see from the Snapchat video, he was a different person around her,” an insider told PEOPLE of the former One Direction student, who died at age 31 after falling from the third-floor balcony of the CasaSur Palermo hotel in Buenos Aires. , Argentina.
The source also revealed that Cassidy, 25, stood by Payne during his recent “legal drama” with ex-fiancée Maya Henry.
“She was very supportive of him throughout the whole legal drama and really stood by him,” an insider told PEOPLE.

In a TikTok shared on October 6, Henry, 23, author of the novel Looking aheadshe claimed her ex – who she does not name in the book but associates him with “One Direction fans” – continues to “blow up” her phone.
She also issued Payne a cease and desist order last week after she claimed he repeatedly contacted her, according to Daily Mail.
Payne was first seen with Cassidy in October 2022. While the couple kept mostly quiet about their relationship at the time, Cassidy shared snippets of her and Payne’s romance from red carpet photos to casual selfies.

Sources told ABC News that Payne had several drugs in his system at the time of his death, including “pink cocaine.” A partial autopsy revealed he “had multiple substances in his body” when he fell to his death.
“Pink cocaine” is a recreational drug that generally includes a combination of methamphetamine, ketamine, MDMA — not necessarily cocaine — according to the National Capital Poison Center. Sources also told ABC News that an “improvised aluminum pipe” used to administer the drugs was found in Payne’s hotel room.
According to the report, the body of the British musician will remain in Argentina until the autopsy is completed.

Buenos Aires police found Liam Payne’s hotel room “in total disarray” after the singer’s death. Minutes before the balcony fell, hotel staff alerted 911, reporting in a 911 call that the singer was “trashing the room,” officials said.
On October 17, police searched his room and found the prescription drug clonazepam (brand name: Klonopin), energy supplements and other over-the-counter drugs strewn throughout, along with “various broken items,” including a TV, a whiskey bottle, a lighter, and a cell phone. they were later found in the inner courtyard of the hotel, where Payne’s body was found after the fall.
According to a preliminary autopsy report, the “Teardrops” singer died of multiple injuries and “internal and external” bleeding, the National Office of the Criminal and Correctional Prosecutor confirmed to PEOPLE.
Coroners confirmed to PEOPLE that 25 of the post-mortem injuries were “compatible with those caused by a fall from a height,” explaining that “injuries to the head were sufficient to cause death,” while “internal and external bleeding” to the skull, chest, abdomen and limbs they contributed to Payne’s death.
