Lili Reinhart Says Living with Acne as an Actress Was ‘Isolating’: ‘I Felt Like I Needed to Hide’ (Exclusive)

Lili Reinhart opens up about the reality of living with acne as an actress.

While speaking exclusively with PEOPLE at the launch party for her new skincare line, Personal Day, in West Hollywood, Calif., on Tuesday, Nov. 12, Reinhart revealed that living with acne can be a lonely experience.

“There aren’t many celebrities with acne,” said the Riverdale star, 28, noting that it can be “isolating.”

“I just want to continue the conversation and open up and invite more people who are out in the public to talk about it and continue to create that safe space,” she added.

The Fraudsters star also shared that adult acne can trigger feelings of shame from earlier in her life, recalling how she “felt like I had to hide” because of her skin.

“I think — and I realize, I’m just realizing — that acne really triggers me because it takes me back to that place of, oh, I’m a 13-year-old girl again,” the mental health advocate said. “I feel out of control because there’s so much going on in the world and so much— happening that you’re like, ‘At least I want to control my face and what it looks like for fucking sakes.’ ”

Reinhart explained that her experience with acne inspired her to create her personal day skincare brand.

“It was really a light bulb moment for me when I realized there wasn’t a whole line of acne care products that I felt I could trust that didn’t have bad ingredients in them,” the actress, who tried Accutane twice, explained.

The Look both ways the actress also shared that her line contains luxurious ingredients designed to heal your skin over time. “The more you use products, the better they work,” she said, noting that acne isn’t something she believes should be “fixed.”

“Sometimes it’s something you have your whole life,” she said, “to tell people [to] fixing something they don’t necessarily have control over is just the most isolating thing in the world. Then again, as a brand, I don’t think we’re trying to cure you. We are trying to help you get better,” she added.

Reinhart also shared that the skincare company — which she co-founded with Shelagh Wong — has been working with “the best in the beauty business” to revive the brand, adding that the company’s board of directors includes her personal esthetician, Sarah Ford, as well as a mental health expert. who deeply understands how acne can affect self-esteem.

“I hope that teenagers dealing with acne feel like they’re in a world that’s a little more accepting just because when I was a kid, nobody talked about it. Certainly, no celebrity has spoken about it,” she said.
