Lily Gladstone Was ‘Really Upset’ That Cate Blanchett Didn’t Win an Oscar for Elizabeth (Exclusive)

Lily Gladstone is a fan of Cate Blanchett!

In an exclusive interview for PEOPLE’s annual Oscar portfolio, Gladstone, 37, talks about how disappointed she was when Blanchett, 54, lost the best actress race at the 1999 Oscars, when she was nominated for the biographical drama Elizabeth.

“I’ve idolized Cate Blanchett since I was a teenager. When… she was up for it Elizabeth at the Oscars and she didn’t win, I remember just being really, really upset about that,” says Gladstone. “She’s my best actress. I think she is the greatest talent of this generation.”

Blanchett, who Gladstone also describes as being “so nice” to her when they met, was nominated that year alongside Fernando Montenegro, Meryl Streep, Emily Watson and Gwyneth Paltrow – who won for her role as Viola de Lesseps in Shakespeare in love.

Amidst the awards show the past few months, Gladstone says she’s “run into” Blanchett “a few times.”

“She’s doing her best to support the film,” Gladstone adds, referring to Killers of the Flower Moonfor which she was nominated for best actress.

As for the advice Blanchett gave her during the many times they crossed paths, Gladstone reveals, “Her big piece of advice was to continue with the adaptogenic mushrooms throughout this period, which is great advice.”

“It’s a very quick, easy self-care ritual that I can adapt, and it comes from one of the most brilliant actors in the world,” she adds.

Gladstone, who is of Siksikaitsitapi and Niimiipuu descent, is the first Native American actress to be nominated for an Oscar. She is the fourth Indigenous actress ever to receive a nomination in this category.

Previously, Merle Oberon was the first woman nominated in this category in 1935 for her role as Kitty Vane in Dark angel. In 2003, Kiwi actress Keisha Castle-Hughes was nominated for the role of Paikea, a young girl who fights for her family’s respect in Whale rider.

Speaking about what she’s looking forward to most about this year’s Academy Awards, Gladstone tells PEOPLE, “I think just being there and absorbing the magnitude of the impact that this movie has made. I’m so excited to share this.”

The 96th Academy Awards, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, will be broadcast live on Sunday, March 10, from the Dolby Theater in Hollywood, California, beginning at 7:00 PM ET.
