Linthoi Chanambam is an Indian judoka who became the first to win a gold medal in any age group at the World Junior Judo Championships held at Arena Hotel Hill, Sarajevo, Bosnia, in August 2022 Indian. She defeated Brazilian Bianca Reis in the final. Women’s 57kg category.

Parents and siblings

Linsoy’s father, Ibohal, was a fish farmer and a mason. Her mother’s name is Guneshwori and she is a part-time tailor and housewife. Lintoy has two sisters.

Profession

Initially, Linthoi Chanambam took a keen interest in football and boxing, she started playing football and even tried boxing. Linthoi’s father insisted that she receive judo training, which she began in 2014. In an interview, Linthoi revealed the reason for learning judo, saying:

“I started practicing judo in my childhood because I believed that I was a boy and not a girl. Also, as a child, I had almost no girl friends. Most of them were boys. I wanted to play a sport like judo since I was a child. In fact, I also like boxing and football. But there are quite a few judo schools near my hometown. That’s what attracted me to the sport the most, and my family supported me from the beginning.”

In 2014, she enrolled in Maya Lambie Sports Academy, a local training college in Imphal. In October 2017, with a view to training in a professional institute, Linthoi started training at Inspire Institute of Sports (IIS), a training center in Bellary, Karnataka, which trains athletes in five Olympic sports Athletes – Wrestling, Boxing, Judo, Athletics, and Swimming, led by JSW Group. Linthoi spoke about her training institute in an interview and said:

They discovered and recruited me when I was 11 years old and since then they have taken great care of my diet and training regimen and provided me with all the tools and facilities I need to succeed. I will always be grateful to JSW and IIS for everything they have done for me, and I hope I can continue to repay their faith in me with medals. ”

In September 2018, Linsoy participated in the National Junior Judo Championships held in Una, Himachal Pradesh. In November 2021, she participated in the National Youth Judo Championships held at Chandigarh University, Chandigarh, Punjab. In December 2021, she participated in the Asia-Oceania Youth Judo Championships in Beirut, Lebanon. In 2022, Linthoi participated in three championships, namely the India Kailuo Youth Games in Haryana (June), the Asian Youth Judo Championships in Bangkok, Thailand (July), and the World Juniors in Sarajevo, Bosnia Judo Championship (August).

Facts/Trivia

  • Linthoi was discovered in Telangana in 2017 by Mamuka Kizilashvili, the head coach of the judo program at Inspire Institute of Sports (IIS) Karnataka. Since 2017, she has been trained by Georgian coach Mamuka Kizilashvili. In an interview, Mamuka said of Lintoy:

    I first met her in Telangana. I am involved in the Talent Identification Development Programme, which aims to identify talented judokas from across India. When I first met her, I knew immediately that she had the potential to be a world-class athlete, even though she was still very young at the time. ”

  • Linthoi’s coach recommended her to the Sports Authority of India (SAI), who started sponsoring her when she was 13 years old. In an interview, she appreciated the efforts of the Sports Authority of India (SAI) and said:

    “SAI has been helping me and supporting me in all my endeavors. I am very grateful to Shri Sandip Pradhan and SAI for their unwavering support. This can be attributed to the immense joy I felt when I won this gold medal.”

  • In an interview, Linthoi recalled her childhood memories of regularly beating boys while growing up in Mayang Imphal, Manipur. she says,

    I fought them many times and ended up hurting some of them. Sometimes my parents have to take them to the hospital,”

  • Linthoi counts Majlinda Kelmendi, a former judoka and judo coach from Kosovo, as her inspiration. Linsoy revealed in an interview that she aspires to win a gold medal at the Olympics. she says,

    “There is one player, she is from Kosovo. Majilinda Kelmendi. She is the first Kosovar athlete to win a gold medal in the Olympics (2016). So, I want to be the first Indian to win a gold medal in the Olympics female.”

  • In March 2020, when COVID-19 imposed the first lockdown, Linthoi was stuck in Ahmeta, Georgia. Unable to return to India, she stayed at Mamuka Kzilashvili’s (coach) home in Georgia for about nine months. In an interview, she talked about being away from her family, saying:

    This is a difficult time for the world, but also for us. Even though I was away from my parents and family, Coach Kizilashvi’s family made sure I was always happy. ”

  • Linthoi enjoys dancing to hip-hop music and gardening.
  • In an interview, Linthoi expressed his happiness at winning the gold medal at the 2022 World Junior Judo Championships, saying:

    I really have nothing to say or explain how I feel right now. All I know is that I’m really happy with this win and I hope to build on it. ”
