Liza Minnelli Was 'Truly Devastated' When She Found First Husband 'In a Compromising Situation with Another Man'

Liza Minnelli married and divorced four times, and according to at least one of her closest friends, the first cut – her marriage to the late Australian entertainer Peter Allen – was the deepest.

“I saw her happiest with someone in her private life with Peter Allen,” says Mia Farrow, 79, in a new documentary Lisa: A truly shiny absolutely true storywhich premiered in June at the Tribeca Film Festival and opens in selected theaters on January 24th. Farrow and Minnelli met when they were in a preschool and became friends as adolescents on a photo shoot for photographing Seventeen magazine.

In the film, Minnelli herself abolished the attraction of her first husband, for whom she was married from 1967 to 1974. “Peter Allen was so funny and so fun that he was,” says Oscar winner, 78. “And he was so great on stage.”

Unfortunately, the union was probably condemned from the beginning, since Allen, who died in 1992. He was gay of the AIDS AIDS complications.

“She was really devastated when she found Peter Allen in a compromising situation with another man,” says her longtime friend Michael Feinstein, 68, in a documentary. “And people always say,” How could she not know? “She didn’t know.

Minnelli’s second husband, Jack Haley Jr., with whom she married from 1974 to 1979, also got her moment. Director and producer, who died in 2001, was a son Wizard oz Star Jack Haley. Feinstein, for one thing, thinks they were the perfect match.

“When Lisa married Jack Haley Jr., there was everything he talked about” daughter Dorothy marries a tin’s son’s son, “he says.” And they were preferential to each other in the sense that they both grew up in Hollywood and had this beautiful abbreviation when they were together and had a lot of fun. ”

Adds Minnelli’s younger half -sister, Lorna Luft, 72: “He really loved my sister.”

Farrow, unfortunately, was not fully sold to Haley and Minnelli as a husband and wife. “I loved Jack and everything, but I really didn’t think Jack was good for her, honestly,” she says.

The documentary also includes Minnelli’s marriages Mark Gera (1979–1992) and her much -published wedding and a eventual division from 2002 from her fourth wife, David Gesto, who died in 2016. From the latter, Farrow has the last word.

“That last husband of hers,” she says, not even trying to mask her disbelief. “I was at the wedding. Oh my God!”
