Anne and Richard died in a terrible accident
He was rushed to hospital but never regained consciousness, while Phil’s mother Anne Spencer (82) also tragically died.
An inquest into Richard’s death heard today that he died of aspiration pneumonia, which is an injury to the lungs.
Location, Location, Location star Phil previously told how his parents were out for lunch when the horror happened.
Anne was driving her husband and their full-time live-in carer when the vehicle overturned over the edge of a bridge on their land.
The investigation revealed that all three were submerged in about three feet of water when the car overturned.
Both Richard – also known as David – and Anne were rushed to hospital following the tragedy on August 18, but sadly they could not be saved.
Their carer was able to get out of the car and quickly raise the alarm.
Paying tribute beforehand, Phil said: “As a family, we’re all trying to hang on to the fact that Mum and Dad were together and that neither will ever have to mourn the loss of the other. Which is a blessing in itself.
“Although they had both been in remarkably good shape days before (hence the sudden idea to go out for lunch), Mum’s Parkinson’s and Dad’s dementia were worsening and the long-term future was a challenge.
“So much so that my mum told me just a week ago that she had come to terms with thinking ‘now it looks like we’ll probably go together’. And so they did.”
A full inquest into Richard’s death has been adjourned until December 19, while a hearing into Anne’s death is yet to begin.
