In 2006, he was appointed as Assistant Magistrate cum Collector of Aligarh. In 2007, he was appointed as Joint Magistrate-cum-Excise Officer of Saharanpur. He served as Chief Development Officer of Prayagraj from 2008 to 2009. He served as District Magistrate cum Collector of Kaushambhi (2009-2011), Amroha (2011), Ghazipur (2011-2012) and Etah (2012-2013). From 2012 to 2013, he underwent on-the-job training titled “Public Policy and Management” from IILM Institute of Management and Integrated Learning, Delhi. From 2013 to 2014, he underwent another on-the-job training in “Natural Resources Management” from Administrative Training Institute, Mysore. In 2013, he was appointed as Special Secretary, Department of Horticulture and Food Processing and Department of Housing and Town Planning, Lucknow. He underwent mid-career training, MCT Stage 3, in 2015. He served as District Magistrate and Collector in Kushinagar (2014-2016) and Mainpuri (2016). He held the post of Karnataka International Cadre Representative for five years due to personal reasons. In 2021, he was appointed as Divisional Commissioner of Saharanpur (2021-2023) and Kanpur Nagar (2023). During his 22-month tenure as Saharanpur Divisional Commissioner, Lokesh M completed major projects including construction and beautification of two ponds on Delhi Road. He was also instrumental in establishing various attractions such as the herb garden and butterfly garden in the company gardens.
