A TRUCK has gone off a viaduct on a major highway in a terrifying crash this evening.

The lorry is said to have smashed through one of the barriers on the M6 ​​at Thelwall Viaduct in Warrington before landing on the ground below.

Three of the four lanes of the highway are currently closed due to serious damage to the barrier.

The truck driver is not believed to have suffered life-threatening injuries.

Police officers were called to reports of an incident on the northbound carriageway between junctions 20 and 21.

They determined that the truck left the roadway and landed on the embankment under the bridge.

The lane closures will remain in place for some time and are expected to continue into the morning, troopers said.

Police advised motorists to avoid the area and find an alternate route.

Fire crews descended to the driver with rescue equipment.

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service used water to cool the lorry and stopped around 1,000 liters of fuel leaking from the vehicle.

A Cheshire Police spokesman said: “Shortly after 6.50pm on Monday, September 30, police were called to reports of an incident on the M6 ​​northbound at Thelwall Viaduct, between junctions 20 and 21.

“Police officers went to the scene and determined that the truck had left the roadway and landed on the embankment under the bridge.

“Three traffic lanes are closed on the northbound carriageway due to serious damage to the bumper.

“One lane will remain open with a reduced speed limit.

“These lane closures will remain in place for some time and are expected to continue into the morning.

“Drivers are advised to avoid the area during this time and find an alternative route.”

A Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “Firefighters were called to reports of a heavy goods vehicle (HGV) leaving the M6 ​​northbound between junctions 20 and 21, near Thelwall Viaduct.

“Upon arrival, they found that the truck ran off the road and overturned on the embankment.

“The teams descended with technical rescue equipment and retrieved the victim, who was handed over to the doctors on duty.

“Crews have applied water to cool the truck and are using dikes to prevent approximately 1,000 liters of biodiesel from leaking from the vehicle’s fuel tank.

“Although the carriageway was fully closed, lanes one and two were reopened by Cheshire Police and the Highways Agency.”
