“[He said,] “It’s also something that could potentially be difficult to deal with if you found out,” Ashley recalled. “‘That’s something you’d have to learn to accept.'”

“I’m like, ‘What? Do you have kids or something?'”, she continued their conversation. “He doesn’t laugh. No, he’s not laughing. And my heart fell to the ground.”

At first, she said Tyler was vague about the situation, simply saying he was a sperm donor for a lesbian couple.

“He was afraid to tell me because he didn’t want to lose me,” Ashley said. “And I said: ‘It’s a robbery. You took away my choice.’ Because all the factors are in play in the capsules. you know And I was so taken aback.”

The two talked for five hours, Ashley recalled, saying she was in such shock she could barely ask questions. At first, she said her priority was to find out if Tyler was a liar at his core.

“I asked him, ‘If I were to sit down with your exes or lovers or people you’ve dated, what would they say about you?'” she explained. “Because for two reasons: first, I want to see if I can see the remnants of that behavior and start looking for it — not to look for it, but just to start paying attention. And secondly, I want to see how you respond because it’s troubling when men blame everything on the woman.”

“So it was refreshing for me that he said, like, ‘Yeah, they’d probably say I’m not the best,'” she added. “And he was vocal about it. Like, ‘I wasn’t the best at going out at all.’ you know And so it wasn’t a red flag for me.”

Ashley then looked into Tyler’s relationship with the children – one of whom he gave sperm to when his friend got married, and the twins who were born after his friend left. Ashley explained that Tyler grew up without a father, so when his friend, whom he met in the military, became a single mother, he decided to step in as the second parent, rather than the “uncle” character he had previously played.

“They knew him as their biological father,” Ashley said. “And it’s very taboo and it’s very strange to think about it, but I don’t think there’s any rulebook on how adoption, sperm donation or egg donation should go. I think it was a mistake on his part to blur those lines so much because of the kids. Not only the wife, but also the children. And I know she wanted him to be part of the boy.”

After learning how Tyler came to be a father, Ashley said it was easier for her to understand why he kept it a secret in the capsules. Calling it a “breakthrough” in their relationship, she said his confession didn’t make her lose trust, it just “tarnished” her trust at the time.

“What he did for his friend is a noble thing,” she said. “It was a great thing. And then for him to enter this family when her partner left, another noble thing. But should he have done it? You could argue that maybe not. His reasoning for it [it] because he wanted to do the right thing, and it almost completely blew up in his face.”

A few years before he left love is blind Ashley said that Tyler and the children’s mother discussed his role in their lives in the future. According to Ashley, whenever the mother was in a new relationship, she would allegedly want Tyler to be less involved so he decided it was not his place to parent the children.

“He started slowing down and coming [less] and basically said something like, ‘You know, I just don’t relate to these kids,'” Ashley explained. “And she’s hurt because she says, ‘Well, why? Why not? Because they are still like your children. Why don’t you have a relationship?’ He says, ‘You know, this is your family, and this is not what I originally signed up for. I know I jumped in to try to help. I know I said I’d be there for the twins.’”

“Biologically, they’re still his kids, so he feels a certain way, but he’s like, ‘I can’t do this,'” she continued. “She was disappointed, and I can see why she was disappointed. But he said: ‘I just don’t want anything to do with you or them because if I talk to you, even though you’re a long-time friend of mine, there’s no way I can’t not talk to the kids. And I think it’s best to get out of here.’”
