Love Is Blind’s Milton Opens Up About the ‘Elephant in the Room’ and His Decision at the Altar (Exclusive)

Warning: This post contains spoilers from the Netflix Season 5 finale Love is blind.

Milton Johnson was steady throughout Love is blind season 5, and the finale was no exception.

In Friday’s episode of the Netflix hit, the 25-year-old oil engineer finally saw his wedding day with fiancee Lydia Velez Gonzalez.

Although their age difference, constant drama with fellow contestant/Lydia’s ex Uche Okoroha, and their different responses to heated situations seemed like too much to handle, the duo managed to overcome these challenges and say “I do” to each other in the end.

Speaking to PEOPLE about why he said yes, Milton said, “I think when it came to Lydia, we were so opposite in some ways, but the most important thing was our values and what we wanted.”

“Our morale was almost the same,” he continues. “I think our age difference was the elephant in the room in the beginning, and then it quickly jumped over. Our desire was to make sure the rest of our community, our extensions, understood what was going on and that we were generally there for each other.”

“With Lydia, it was simple,” he adds. “It was easy.”

Despite the allegations made at the time — including Uche’s surprising claim that Lydia stalked him after their breakup and then allegedly followed him on the show — Milton says he wasn’t fooled by his co-star’s comments.

“I first got involved in this experiment because I wanted to see if I could potentially find my wife,” he says. “At the end of the day, that’s my main goal, outside of the relationships I’ve built with the other guys, [which was] incredibly. Unfortunately, [the drama with Uche comes as] number two to find my wife.”

Another point of contention for the couple seems to have been Milton’s family, who did not immediately welcome Lydia and questioned the legitimacy of their relationship. Even with their tense interaction before the wedding, Milton insists they had his best interests at heart.

“I’ll tell you, I have an amazing family. They sure are protective. I’m the younger brother. The only boy,” he says. “My mom, she’s the head of the family. She’s the one. And then my sisters, they look out for me. So I think more than anything, they’ve been extremely protective of me. Sometimes it’s hard for them not to see me as that 12-year-old little child.”

“But if you want to know more about what the relationship is like now, I think you’ll have to wait and see,” he adds, teasing an update on their relationship that will come during the Season 5 reunion, which drops this weekend.
