Lupita Nyong’o Adjusts to ‘New Reality’ After ‘Heartbreak’ amid Selema Masekela Split

Lupita Nyong’o has celebrated the power of friendship since her recent split from boyfriend Selema Masekela. On Thursday, the 40-year-old actress celebrated her close friend Palmer Hefferan in an Instagram post that included photos of the two together over the years and solo shots of Hefferan.

“Recently, when my life was turned upside down due to a broken heart, Palmer quickly flew in to be by my side and help me through the hardest days as I adjust to my new reality,” Nyong’o wrote at the bottom of the caption, apparently referring to her split from Masekele.

Lupita Nyong’o announces split from Selema Masekela in message about ‘pain’ of recent ‘fraud’

Nyong’o began the post by celebrating her friend’s unwavering loyalty over the years.

“Palmer is the kind of friend I can rely on in the thick and thin,” she wrote. “We don’t have to talk every day, but when we do, we pick up right where we left off, like no time has passed at all.”

The Oscar winner explained that the two first met as roommates in drama school and that they “found a kindred spirit in each other.” She joked: “Especially in the kitchen!”

The Our the star went on to share tidbits about their friendship and how her former roommate has been by her side for years. As Nyong’o continued her description and mentioned her recent “heartbreak,” she shared that her friend still reaches out to her.

“She cooked me delicious meals, found me therapeutic activities to take my mind off things, cried with me and made me laugh until I cried happier tears.” Nyong’o continued, “She never tired of being a favor to me, and the greatest gift she gave me in my life was helping me get my first pet, Yoyo.”

The cat’s new owner admitted: “Every time I look at him and cuddle with him, I remember the selfless love that my sister showed me from another gentleman.”

Nyong’o closed the headline by thanking Hefferan for her kindness. “I will never be able to repay her for the kindness she has shown me, and the beauty of friendship is that it is never about settling scores!”

She declared: “But I have every intention of trying… Sincerely, deeply thank you, P!”

Hefferan is a Tony-nominated sound designer who most recently worked on Broadway Penelope, Nyong’o pointed out.

While the actress celebrated her friend’s career successes, she also provided a glimpse into their lives. The Black panther the star told how the two “defied college norms” and cooked for each other when one was “too overwhelmed with schoolwork to do his fair share of work around the house.”

Nyong’o paid tribute to Hefferan weeks after announcing her split from Masekela, 52, in a heartfelt Instagram post on October 19. Since then, the actress has not been seen, appearing at the GO Gala 2023 campaign and even thanked her Instagram follower for her kindness.
