Lupita Nyong’o Celebrates Late Chadwick Boseman’s Birthday with Throwback Photo: ‘A Heroic Friend’

Lupita Nyong’o celebrates her late friend Chadwick Boseman’s birthday.

On Wednesday, Nyong’o shared a Polaroid photo of herself, Boseman, who died of colon cancer at age 43 in 2020. Black panther director Ryan Coogler and actor Michael B. Jordan pose together. In her caption, Nyong’o, 40, explained that she took the photo in 2018 while Coogler and Black panther the actors promoted the film in South Korea. Wednesday marked the late star’s 47th birthday.

“Celebrating a heroic friend’s birthday,” she captioned the post. “I am blessed that his time on this earth coincided with mine.”

Nyong’o and Boseman starred in the 2018 Marvel Studios film Black panther; Boseman portrayed T’Challa, the newly crowned king of the fictional nation of Wakanda. Nyong’o played Nakia, a Wakandan warrior who has a romantic relationship with T’Challa.

Boseman kept his years-long battle with cancer a secret even from those he worked with, leaving Nyong’o to describe the aftermath of his death as “kicking me in the stomach every morning” in an Instagram post she shared weeks after his death.

Nyong’o, Coogler and Jordan are back for Black pantherits sequel, Wakanda foreverwhich was published in 2022.

Nyong’o has made a habit of paying tribute to Boseman on the anniversary of his death for the past three years. Last August, she shared another photo of Boseman Black pantheron a press tour in South Korea in 2018, reflecting at the time that she “experienced unique pain at the news of @chadwickboseman’s death.”

“The confusion was so profound that it took months for me to believe in the feeling of joy again,” she wrote in the post.

Chadwick Boseman, Michelle Yeoh, Gal Gadot and more will receive stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2024.

“Death is difficult to understand, perhaps even more difficult to accept,” she added at the time. “But the love that came from the life he lived will fuel every anniversary that marks his absence. Chadwick may no longer be in our photos, but he will always be in our hearts.”

Boseman last appeared in the 2020 films Yes 5 Bloods and Oh Rainey’s Black Bottom. The latter film earned the actor a posthumous Oscar nomination in 2021. He is among a number of entertainment industry figures to receive stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in Los Angeles in 2024.
