They used every means possible to deal with the opposition who tried to prevent them from realizing their vision of uplifting Dalits. Jayaraj is a powerful weapon for chief ministers to silence anyone who stands in the way of their vision. In 1979, Jayaraj ruled Bangalore’s underworld under the guidance of the CM’s son-in-law MD Nataraj, but he was sentenced to 10 years in prison for assaulting a man named Thigalararapete Gopi in a court. In jail, Devaraj Urs died and Jayaraj started losing control of the underworld. When he was released from prison in 1984, other professors such as Kotwal Ramachandra and Oil Kumar took their place. After his release from jail, he started trying to regain his place in the industry and in 1986, a godfather named Kotwal Ramachandra was killed by Agni Shridhar, Varadharaja Nayak and Bacchan supported by Jayaraj. In 1986, he was sent to jail along with Agni and Bachchan in this murder case. In 2007, a film titled “Aa Dinagalu” depicted the death of Kotwal Ramachandra. Jayaraj claimed a place in the industry and started running Ghareebi Hatao, a newspaper targeting Janata Dal politicians and police.
