IIT Madras Campus in Tanzania: Ministry of Education (MoE), Government of India and Ministry of Education and Vocational Training (MoEVT) in Zanzibar, Tanzania signed an agreement on July 5, 2023. In collaboration of IIT Madras, their goal is to establish the first overseas campus of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Zanzibar, Tanzania.

IIT Madras scheduled the start of the program at the proposed campus in Tanzania in October 2023. The signing ceremony of the agreement was held in the presence of His Excellency Hussein Ali Mwinyi, President of Zanzibar and S. Jaishankar, Ministry India’s Foreign Minister.

IIT in Tanzania: India and Africa join forces to promote internationalization of education

Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s official tweet reads: “The signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between EduMinOfIndia, IIT Madras and MoEVT, Zanzibar-Tanzania to establish the IIT Madras-Zanzibar facility marks a historic start. towards the internationalization of Indian education.”

New IIT Facility in Africa to Meet Regional Needs

According to an official statement, the campus symbolizes the age-old friendship between India and Tanzania, highlighting India’s commitment to promoting people-to-people ties across Africa and the Southern Hemisphere.

The statement further emphasizes that this unique partnership will bring IITM’s renowned educational expertise to a prominent place in Africa, effectively addressing the region’s current needs. In addition, the establishment of a new IIT campus abroad will facilitate further research collaboration with other world-renowned academic institutions.

IIT Madras will develop academic programs for a foreign campus in Zanzibar-Tanzania

IIT Madras will be responsible for developing the academic programs, curricula, student selection procedures and pedagogical details for the new campus. On the other hand, the Zanzibar-Tanzania government will provide the necessary funds for capital and operating expenses.

According to the statement, students enrolled at this campus will be awarded a degree by IIT Madras. The interdisciplinary degrees offered will be at the forefront of innovation and are expected to appeal to a wide variety of groups, including students from Africa and other countries. It is also important to note that Indian students can apply for these programs.

According to the institute, the establishment of a foreign campus is expected to enrich the quality of education and research at IIT Madras, thanks to the increasing diversity among students and faculty. The agreement was signed by Binaya Srikanta Pradhan, High Commissioner of India to Tanzania, Raghunathan Rengaswamy, Dean of Global Engagement at IIT Madras, and Khalid Masoud Wazir, Acting Secretary General of MoEVT Zanzibar, representing the respective organisations. their.
