Mahesh Vaman Manjrekar is an Indian actor, director, screenwriter and producer. He is best known for playing the role of Raj Yadav/Baali in the Bollywood film Kaante (2002).

Mahesh Manjrekar was born on Saturday, August 16, 1958, in Mumbai (age 65; as of 2023). His zodiac sign is Leo. He completed his education at Don Bosco High School in Mumbai and went to Mumbai University for graduation. He was inclined toward acting since childhood. Manjrekar started working in theater while in college. He started his acting career in 1984 with the critically acclaimed Marathi drama Aflatoon. His performance in the play was greatly appreciated. Later, he composed plays such as “All the Best”, “Dhyanimani” and “Gidhade”.

Mahesh Manjrekar belongs to a Hindu family. Not much is known about his parents. He has a brother Shailesh Manjrekar and a sister Devyani Manjrekar. Mahesh Manjrekar met fashion designer Deepa Mehta during her college days and started dating her. The two got married after several years of dating. The couple parted ways after a few years of marriage. They have a son Satya Manjrekar (actor) and a daughter Ashwami Manjrekar (film producer, chef).
After breaking up with Deepa, Mahesh tied the knot with Marathi actress Medha Manjrekar. He has a daughter Saiee Manjrekar (actress) and a stepdaughter Gauri Ingasale (actor), who is Medha’s daughter from her first husband.
Acting and directing career
Mahesh Manjrekar started his acting career in 1992 with the role of ‘Inspector Jamdad’ in the Marathi film ‘Jeeva Sakha’. Mahesh made his debut in the Hindi film industry with the film “Vastav: The Reality” and has since done many Hindi films including “The Plan”, “Musafir”, “Zinda” and “Dus Kahaniyaan” .
As a director, his credits include Aai (1995), Vaastav: The Reality (1999), Nidaan (2000), Astitva (2000) and Viruddh (2005). He also tried singing and dubbed for many songs in movies, such as “Kaante” (2002), “Golden City – Bombay 1982: Ek Ankahee Kahani” (2010), etc. In 2006, he participated in the first season of the dance reality show “Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa” and won the second runner-up position in the show.
He also starred in the Hollywood Oscar-winning film Slumdog Millionaire (2008). Manjrekar made a special appearance in the film Sanju. Mahesh even appeared in the Netflix series Selection Day, where he played cricket coach Mr. Tommy.

Political career
Mahesh Manjrekar first entered politics in 2014 during the Lok Sabha elections. He contested the 2014 elections as a member of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) from the Mumbai North-West constituency led by Raj Thackeray; however, he lost to Shiv Sena’s Gajanan Kirtikar.

- In 2002, Manjrekar told police that he had a conversation with the underworld at a hotel in Nashik along with Sanjay Dutt, Sanjay Gupta and Harish Sughand. However, he denied speaking to anyone after appearing in court.
- In May 2013, the poster of the Marathi film “Kokanastha” directed by Mahesh Manjrekar attracted criticism. The poster, which shows actor Sachin Khedekar dressed as RSS Swayamsewak and carries the slogan: Taath Kana, Haach Baana (Straight spine is our role), is being called a “Brahmin supremacist”. Later, Mahesh refuted all supremacist claims and said:
I’m making a film under the law in a free country. I couldn’t go around asking for poster approval. People are entitled to their opinions, just like I am entitled to my own. “
