Peta Murgatroyd says she was so focused on “trying not to trip over her dress” during her walk down the aisle that it’s hard for her to immediately recall other sweet moments from her romantic wedding to Maksim Chmerkovskiy.
“She’s the worst,” Chmerkovskiy, 43, jokes to PEOPLE about his wife and co Dancing with the stars alum. “She also doesn’t remember much about our anniversary.”
“Wait. No way. I really loved our ceremony,” insists Murgatroyd, 37. “I loved standing up there. I remember that feeling standing there with Greg, who married us.”
“That’s it? Nothing to do with the husband?” – asks Chmerkovskiy, gently teasing his wife, with whom he shares sons Shai (6) and Rio (3 months).
“I was trying not to trip over my dress,” she admits as she walked down the aisle in a ball gown with a fitted, off-the-shoulder bodice and tiered skirt. “When they said, ‘You’re husband and wife now,’ it was like, ‘Wow, shit. I’m married.’ Yes, it was a good moment.”
“Given her response, I said, ‘Yeah, it was fine,'” he says, gently mocking his wife, asking her, “So you couldn’t say that was the first time you saw me and I was dressed and I’m standing there. Because I say that when you came up, you too…”
“I was also nervous walking down the aisle,” explains Murgatroyd.
“He’s not paying attention to me,” concludes Chmerkovskiy.

The DWTS the lovebirds tied the knot in a fairytale ceremony on July 8, 2017 at Oheka Castle in Huntington, New York.
“It’s very special. It’s amazing. We dreamed about this wedding. We wanted it to be in a castle,” Chmerkovskiy tells PEOPLE from the Long Island location. “I mean, I came to America in the 90s. I came across this place. I always wanted to get married and then be in that place and have such a special opportunity.”
“Max has loved this place for years and I accepted the proposal and fell in love with it immediately,” Murgatroyd told PEOPLE in 2017 about the wedding venue. “I never thought about getting married in a castle, but my jaw dropped when I saw it for the first time.”

Chmerkovski’s brother and friend DWTS professional Val Chmerkovskiy served as best man. Other wedding guests with DWTS ties included best man Tony Dovolani, bridesmaids Rumer Willis and Sharna Burgess, plus Jenna Johnson, Nyle DiMarco and Candace Cameron Bure.
Chmerkovskiy described how he stayed focused on his wife-to-be as she glided down the aisle hand-in-hand with her father.
“There’s a moment when she comes out and walks towards you and it’s crazy,” Chmerkovskiy recalls of Murgatroyd’s discovery during their ceremony.
“When you walked it was like, ‘Oh my God,'” he adds.
After the ceremony, the couple’s first dance was a surprisingly simple slow dance.
However, Chmerkovskiy did his best to serenade his new bride while his friends performed a choreographed dance behind him.

As the happy couple enjoyed their wedding day, Chmerkovskiy was left feeling like he “knew every person, more than 250” of the guests in attendance, but “they were so busy communicating with each other” that they noticed the groom as he entered the hall. room.
“Some of my worlds collided,” Chmerkovskiy says of his surreal achievement. “I was like, how are these two people in the same room? So I think it was a moment of, wow, what a celebration this is. And oh, it’s our celebration. It was crazy. It was amazing.”
