Malcolm Gladwell was born Malcolm Timothy Gladwell on September 3, 1963. His birthplace is Fareham, Hampshire, England. He is of English and Afro-Jamaican descent and is of Canadian nationality. He is the son of Graham Gladwell, an Englishman, and Joyce Gladwell, an Afro-Jamaican mother. His father teaches him mathematics, and his mother is a therapist. In 2021, he celebrated his 58th birthday. He moved with his family to Ontario, Canada when he was six years old and spent his entire childhood there. He has two older brothers.
Malcolm grew up in rural Ontario Mennonite country, attending a Mennonite church. His great-great-grandmother was an Igbo from Nigeria, West Africa. He finished his studies at Ontario High School. In 2007, Gladwell received an honorary doctorate from the University of Waterloo after graduating from high school. Gladwell interned at the National Center for Journalism in Washington, DC, in the spring of 1982. In 1984, he earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Trinity College, University of Toronto.
