Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar was born in 1962 (60 years old; as of 2022) in Mamidala, Nalgonda District, Telangana State. He received his MS (EE) and PhD (EE) degrees from the Department of Electrical Engineering, IIT Madras. After completing her PhD, Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar started teaching in the Department of Electrical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi. While at IIT Delhi, he was appointed NXP (Philips) Chair Professor at IIT Delhi. This position was created by Philips Semiconductors of the Netherlands (now NXP Semiconductors India Private Limited). Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar has been appointed as Chairman, Electronics Group, Department of Electrical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, from 2001 to 2006. He was appointed as the Coordinator of the Interdisciplinary Program on VLSI Design, Tools and Technology at IIT Delhi from September 2009 to September 2011. During her tenure at IIT Delhi, Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar held two important positions in the Department of Nanoelectronics – Principal Investigator, Nanoscale Research Facility (NRF) and Principal Investigator, Center for Nanodevices and Excellence Systems and Services in Nanoscale Electronics, Nanodevice modeling and simulation, innovative device design and power semiconductor devices. The Government of India and the Ministry of Human Resource Development provided assistance to IIT Delhi for this project. The Teacher Evaluation Committee of IIT Delhi has rated the teaching skills of Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar as outstanding. While at IIT Delhi, he was a member of the editorial board of Scientific Reports, an online open access research publication. The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) appointed him editor of its journal, Electron Devices Society, which he served from 2006 to 2015. During this period, he was appointed editor-in-chief of IETE Technical Review. His tenure at IIT Delhi. Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar is a Fellow of the National Academy of Engineering of India, the National Academy of Sciences of India and the Institute of Electronics and Telecommunications Engineers of India. In 2007 and 2008, he served as Vice Chairman, Joint Entrance Examination (JEE), Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi. Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar was appointed as the organizing chairman of the All India Joint Management Entrance Test (JMET) in 2011. In 2012, under his supervision, the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) was organized at 860 centers in 170 towns across India. He is a frequent speaker on nanoelectronics related topics at global conferences and workshops and is considered a distinguished lecturer of the IEEE Electronic Devices Society (Nanoelectronics). While serving as Professor, Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar was appointed to the Executive Committee of the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), Ministry of Culture, Government of India, and to the Governing Body of the National Council of Science Museums (NCSM). The Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Center (IN-SPACE), an organization established by the Indian government, appointed him as a member of the board of directors. On June 24, 2016, Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar was appointed as a member of the University Grants Commission (UGC) for a period till June 23, 2019. He served as Chairman of the UGC from January 14, 2016 to February 2, 2017, and during the same period, he was also a member of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). The University Grants Commission appointed Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar as Chairman on February 4, 2022. He was appointed to a five-year term. The official announcement of his appointment was made by a senior official from the Ministry of Education at a media conference. He said,
The central government has appointed M Jagadesh Kumar as chairman of the UGC for a term of five years or until he attains the age of 65 years, whichever is earlier. “

- Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar is a fitness fanatic. He practices Shito-Ryu karate every day and goes to the gym regularly. Both of his sons are associated with famous Indian bands and are trained guitarists. They are gold medalists at the Delhi State Karate Championships.
- In July 2017, Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar led a ‘Tiranga March’ at the Jinan University campus along with some prominent RSS and Army officials. The awareness of nationalist ideology among students on campus was a major focus of the march.
