Mamie Laverock Stands and Takes First Steps After Falling 5 Stories from Balcony: 'It Feels Really Weird'

Mamie Laverock is making gradual progress in her recovery after falling from a balcony.

The When the heart calls actress — who fell five stories from a balcony in May — was seen standing and taking her first steps after the accident in a video posted on her official Facebook page on Friday, August 2.

“Thank you surgeon, thank you prayers, thank you Lord. Mamie just took her first steps,” the caption read. Laverock, 20, appeared in the footage for the first time alongside two medical staff as she sat on a hospital bed wearing air casts on both legs while surrounded by her family.

One of the staff members told Laverock that they were “here to help,” and she nervously said, “I don’t know if I can do any more…” She then put her hands on the walker that the medics were wheeling in front of her.

“So what you can do, you can even push yourself off the bed,” the same staff member told Laverock. “Yes,” she replied. She then grabbed a walker and pulled herself up while the medics held her hand.

Family members could be heard cheering and clapping as Laverock, smiling, said, “… to get up!” She added: “It feels really weird. It feels really weird.”

After a pause of a few seconds, Laverock said, “I feel very shaky.” One of the doctors then asked her if she could separate her feet. “Oh my god, the ski boots are really heavy,” the actress replied before spreading her legs.

Still standing, Laverock said, “I feel like I’m going to fall backwards,” as the doctor encouraged her to use a walker for assistance. Then she looked up from her walker and asked, “Is dad on Facetime?” Laverock then called her dad, “Hi dad … look, I’m standing with a walker. All alone.”

She then stepped with her left foot and took a few more steps with the walker, prompting an enthusiastic reaction from her family.

Laverock remained in a critical condition after falling five stories from a balcony walkway on May 26, having previously been taken to hospital after suffering a “medical emergency”. She suffered “life-threatening injuries” from the fall, which occurred after she was taken to a Vancouver hospital, according to a GoFundMe page set up by her family at the time, which has since been shut down.
