Man Dies After Drowning in Lake Outside SoFi Stadium: ‘He Went Underwater and Did Not Resurface’

  • A man died after drowning in a lake near California’s SoFi Stadium on Friday night, police said.
  • “We express our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the individual for the loss,” the statement from the stadium said
  • This is the second drowning death since a man entered the six-hectare man-made lake in 2022.

A 19-year-old man died Friday night after drowning in a lake outside SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, police said.

Security officers spotted him entering the lake shortly before 9:30 p.m. local time Friday, the Inglewood Police Department said in a statement obtained by PEOPLE.

“Law enforcement officers working at the event at the stadium also saw a man swimming in the lake,” police added. “As he continued to swim, he went under the water and did not resurface.”

An extensive search and rescue operation for the missing man was then launched.

“The coordinated effort included divers from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office, a rescue dive team from the Los Angeles County Fire Department, helicopter support and drone technology,” the department said.

The man’s body was pulled from the lake shortly before 11 p.m., police said. His identity has not yet been revealed.

“It is with great sadness that we learned of the death of one person last evening,” SoFi Stadium said in a statement obtained by PEOPLE. “Our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the individual for their loss. Our thoughts are with them at this difficult time.”

The victim’s death occurred a few days before a powerful atmospheric storm caused by the river began to hit Southern California. As of Monday morning, more than 500,000 people across the state were without power, and at least one death was reported, according to CNN.

Deadline noted that Friday night’s drowning was the second since 2022.
