Mandy Moore Jokes Her ‘Poor’ Husband Taylor Goldsmith ‘Has a Whole Life’ After She Falls Asleep (Exclusive)

Mandy Moore may have just managed to balance work and private life.

“I feel lucky that I’m pretty good at not taking work home with me,” Moore, 39, tells PEOPLE in this week’s issue. “Because if I did it with This is usat one point I would have a mental breakdown.”

Although the mum to sons Gus (2) and Ozzie (14 months) admits her “brain was constantly racing” while filming the new series Dr. deathshe says, “it was easy to come home, and if everyone’s needs were met, to just say, ‘I’m going to take a nice hot shower and crash.’

But usually, for the Emmy-nominated actress, the decompression begins after her sons go to bed.

“The kids go to bed and then it’s a good time for mom and dad to watch something together, maybe have a glass of wine if we’re feeling really crazy, but usually we’re too tired for that,” admits Moore, who married musician Taylor Goldsmith in 2018.

“It’s just like, ‘Okay, now I have a chance to answer all the emails that day and plan for the next day,'” This is us says the star. “The kids go to bed, I shower and then I make sure breakfast is ready for the next day, and as much as I can muster lunch is made and the animals are all taken care of. ”

Only then can Moore truly relax. “I can kind of relax and read a book or watch 10 minutes of something before I fall asleep,” she says. “My poor husband, he has his whole life after me after I fall asleep, like, two hours of reading or watching some Criterion Collection movie without me because I’m fast asleep.”

Still, being a mom gives Moore peace of mind.

“Sometimes I feel completely underwater, but mostly my two little people keep me calm,” she says.

Moore also credits becoming a parent with helping her “become a better advocate for herself.”

“I think I’m very good at drawing a line in the sand and setting boundaries for myself and my family,” The Princess Diaries alum says. “Being an advocate for my children has made me a better advocate for myself. I think I really fell into a pattern of just pleasing people and saying, ‘Yes,’ even to my own detriment, when I would regret it.”

To establish those boundaries, Moore admits, “it definitely took me time. And I agree with that. Now I’m there at almost 40 years old and as a parent, I’m much better at it.”

The “Candy” singer recently scored a major parenting victory when she took her oldest son on a trip to Disney.

“He got to meet Mickey Mouse,” says Moore. “Hopefully this will be something that will be talked about for at least the next few weeks. I keep reminding him, ‘Remember when we went to Disney recently? Remember when you had your picture taken with Mickey Mouse?’”
