Manish Narwal is an Indian Paralympian who specializes in para air pistol shooting. He competes at the SH1 level. SH1 is a classification of an athlete based on a disability of one arm or leg, including the loss or partial damage of that body part. At just sixteen years old, he took center stage with an outstanding performance in his first international match. But his actual performance came at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics (held in 2021 due to the COVID-19 lockdown), when he won the gold medal ahead of his more experienced compatriot Singhraj Adhana, It attracted national attention. Manish Narwal was born into a sports-loving family, his father was a wrestler. His siblings all play the same sport. Carrying on this tradition, he also wanted to become an athlete. Instead, he was more interested in football. But fate had something else in store for him. In 2016, on the recommendation of a family friend, his father took him to the 10X Shooting Academy in Ballabhgarh (near Faridabad). His father later revealed the main reason for switching from football to shooting.
He said he wanted to protect his son from the intrigue and accusations in the team environment because he has this disability. Coming from a middle-class family, his father had to lend him money to buy him a shooting pistol.Manish Narwal said in an interview
“He was 13 when he came to my academy. It took him a while to get into shooting. He would shoot for a few days and then not come back. I knew his dad, so I would call him back. That kind of thing This happened for several days before he started to take an interest in 2016. He barely spoke. For a child with different abilities, it was difficult to socialize with others at first. Teaching him was difficult at first because of his support arm (Left) couldn’t get support and balance from his other arm. He could only move his fingers a little bit. So, it took me some time to learn the technique.”

Manish Narwal’s mother name is Santosh Narwal and she is a housewife.
He has four siblings namely Manjeet Narwal, Sikha Narwal and Shiva Narwal. He also has a grandfather named Chaudhry Dalip Singh Narwal. He is 95 years old (as of 2021).
Disabled right hand
While he was at standard one, he noticed some unusual pain in his right arm. As a result, he has difficulty lifting heavier objects. A medical examination revealed he had a rare congenital defect in his right arm. Congenital diseases refer to diseases that occur shortly after birth or in the mother’s womb.He said in an interview with the Youtube channel
“I realized I was different in first grade. I had problems with my right arm. I cried a lot. I was afraid of being in front of people.”

He was spotted by Jai Prakash Nautiyal, the high performance director of the Indian Parachute Shooting Team, who saw him firing accurately at the target. He was impressed by his talent. Later, he decided to train the young man to become a successful athlete.
Manish’s decision proved to be the right one when he started winning medals at national level competitions. He soon started playing for his national team and in November 2017 was selected for the World Shooting Para-Sports World Cup in Bangkok (Thailand). He won the gold medal in the P1-10m air pistol men’s SH1 category, while his compatriot Singhraj Adhana bagged the silver medal.
He also won a silver medal at the World Para Sports Shooting World Cup in Al Ain, UAE, in March 2018. His score in the men’s 10-meter air pistol SH1 group was 234.6, second only to China’s Lou Xiaolong (235.6) and Ukraine’s Oleksiy Denysiuk, the bronze medalist. He also scored 525 points in the P4 Mixed 50m Pistol SH1 competition. Avani Lekhara and Rajveer Singh Sekhon are two other budding performers from India. At this time, he had won 16 international medals and 19 national medals. In the same year, the 3rd Asian Para Games was held in Jakarta, Indonesia, in October 2018, with a total of 302 Indian para-athletes participating. Manish won the gold medal in the men’s 10m air pistol shooting event. But it’s not over yet. He also won a silver medal in the P4 mixed 50M pistol event, taking India’s medal tally to 72, which is India’s highest medal tally so far in the history of the Asian Para Games.
He continued this form again, winning gold medals in the P1, P4 and P6 events at the 2019 World Cup in Osijek, Croatia.
He again won a bronze medal in the mixed 50m pistol SH1 event at the 2019 World Para Shooting Championships in Sydney (Australia). He also won two other bronze medals in the men’s 10m air pistol SH1 and mixed 50m pistol SH1 categories at the same event. In late 2019, the COVID-19 pandemic began to spread across the country. As a result, he was forced to sit outside for a long time. But instead of sitting, he chose to practice every day. A few years later, he returned to action at the 2021 World Para Shooting World Cup in Al Ain (UAE), defeating three-time world champion Sareh Javanmardi of Iran in the mixed 50m pistol SH1 individual event. His teammate Singhraj won the gold medal Adena. He also broke the previous world record held by Serbian Rastko Jokic (228.6) in 2019 with a score of 229.1 points. He also won a silver medal in the P4-Mixed 50m Pistol SH1 team event along with Rahul Jakhar Sekhon and Singhraj Adhana.
A few months later, the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games will be held from August 24 to September 5, 2021. 4537 Paralympians participated in this grand event, including 54 from India. Tek Chand (shot put and javelin thrower) led the Indian team at the inauguration ceremony. In his first competition in the 10m air pistol SH1 category, he slowly started to finish seventh. As the tournament progressed, the nation’s hopes were gradually realized as Navarre began to show his class in his next event, the Mixed 50m Pistol SH1 event. The rivalry between him and his rival Adana was fierce. Instead, it was a bit of a rollercoaster at first. But he quickly found his stride, scoring a healthy 19.6 points and 19.7 points in the fourth and fifth rounds respectively. At the time, Sergey Malyshev of the Russian Paralympic Committee was in the lead. But he felt the pressure and struggled in the eighth round. Navarre and Adena moved up to the top two. Another gold and silver medal for India. India’s medal tally at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics is 19, its highest medal tally so far in the history of the Paralympic Games.
Soon after he won the gold medal, his hometown and his residence erupted in joy. People started gathering outside his house and handing out sweets.his grandfather said
“This is the happiest moment for me. The residents of our village decided to wait for my grandson to send their blessings when he returns from abroad.”

- Manish Narwal belongs to Kasula village in Sonepat (Haryana). In 1993, his family moved to Faridabad where he spent his entire childhood.
