Manti Te’o was born on January 26, 1991 in Laie, Hawaii. His nationality is Hawaiian-American, and he is of mixed ethnicity due to his Samoan ancestry. As of 2023, he is 32 years old. He is the son of Brian and Ottilia Te’o, and has five siblings: BrieAnne, Tiara, Eden and Maya, as well as Manasseh. He went to Punahou School in Honolulu, Hawaii and played for them. Te’o was named the Honolulu Advertiser State Defensive Player of the Year and the Gatorade All-State Player of the Year as a junior in 2007.
He was named first team all-state after amassing 90 tackles and five sacks on defense and 400 yards and ten touchdowns as a running back. Te’o helped Punahou win its first-ever national football championship during his senior year in 2008. He was named the 2008 Sporting News Athlete of the Year, becoming the first Hawaiian and the first athlete of Polynesian descent to receive the honor. Te’o is just the third Hawaii high school player to be named to the USA Today All-American team, following Pat Kesi in 1990 and Jason Ching in 1995 (Ching is also a Punahou and Notre Dame alumnus).
He was considered one of the top prospects in the class of 2009. Te’o committed to the University of Notre Dame on National Signing Day in 2009. He was a member of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team from 2009 to 2012. In the Irish’s game against Purdue, he made his first varsity start.
