News about Marco Agnifil
NXIVM leader Keith Raniere was defended by Marc Agnifilo at press conferences, on documentaries, and while on trial in US District Court in Brooklyn for approximately two months while sitting next to him. Agnifilo is now recusing himself from the case of Raniere, the notorious self-help guru known as “Vanguard,” who is in prison in Arizona serving a 120-year federal sentence. In letters filed in federal court on February 23, the defense attorney and Teny Geragos, another of Raniere’s attorneys, indicated his resignation from the case.
The lawyers resigned because Raniere, a former Halfmoon member who founded his iconic firm in the Colonie for 20 years, hired Jennifer Bonjean, Joseph McBride and Steven Alan Metcalf II to represent him in his appeal. It has offices in Vancouver, Mexico, Los Angeles, and Washington state, among others. In June 2019, a jury found Raniere, now 60, guilty of sex trafficking, conspiracy to engage in forced labor and racketeering, as well as predicate offenses including possession of child pornography, extortion and identity theft.
In a letter to US District Judge Nicholas Garaufis, Agnifilo wrote: “I humbly request that I be legally removed as Mr. Raniere’s official counsel now that Mr. Raniere’s new counsel have appeared in this matter. “I have discussed my intention to retire with Mr. Raniere and he agrees,” he said. Agnifilo argued that the resignation would not harm him, since Raniere has new lawyers. It was not known if Raniere’s co-defendant Agnifilo, Albany attorney Paul DerOhannesian, would also drop the case.
Agnifilo fiercely defended Raniere at press conferences outside Brooklyn federal court and in the courtroom, where he was joined by DerOhannesian. Agnifilo downplayed the idea that women in Raniere’s secret “master/slave” organization, Dominus Obsequious Sororium, or DOS, were branded in their pelvic regions during a May 2018 press conference. The scope of the brand, the discomfort and the appearance of the brand, according to the victims, was not disclosed.
“There are famous boy groups with different brands. It is completely without controversy. However, when a group of women decides to stigmatize themselves, they suddenly become victims,” Agnifilo told reporters.
In his closing arguments before the jury in June 2019, Agnifilo warned them that using the word “cult” in their deliberations would be prejudicial. I think you have to think about the content and not let that word sway you,” he added.
He concluded by saying that DOS “isn’t for everyone.” However, she said the former “slave” who was sexually assaulted by Raniere and blindfolded from her, stripped naked and taken to the Halfmoon residence might have benefited from it because she was previously suicidal and did not want to TWO. .
