Maren Morris knows that sometimes the show must go on.
In this week’s issue of PEOPLE magazine, the Grammy winner reveals that singing songs inspired by her ex-husband Ryan Hurd can hit the spot — but she doesn’t regret it.
“Obviously there’s room for songs you’ve written about the love of your life,” Morris, 34, tells PEOPLE. “In a way, I don’t want to say that I go on autopilot for songs like this so I don’t feel the pain, but it is what it is. These are songs that have meaning and meaning to people, so it’s such a gift.”

The “Push Me Over” singer and fellow singer-songwriter Hurd, 37, first met in 2013 when they co-wrote a song for Tim McGraw. They started dating in 2016, married in 2018 and had a son, Hayes, 4, before Morris filed for divorce last October, citing irreconcilable differences. (They divorced in January.)
Before the split, Morris and Hurd continued to work together over the years. He was her muse for many songs on it GIRL and A humble quest album, and were even nominated for a Grammy for their duet “Chasing After You” from 2021.
“I don’t really look back on them with shame or regret,” he says of the songs that inspired Hurd and worked on together. “It’s like, ‘It was a really good time, and I really felt that way when I wrote it; it didn’t work out in the long run, but the song is still important.’

Last fall, Morris performed an intimate show at the Bowery Ballroom in New York City, where she played Hurd-inspired “Background Music” by fan request.
“I’m not going to lie, it’s a tough song to sing right now,” says Morris, who is asking fans for input on the setlist for her current RSVP Redux tour.
However, some songs take on new meaning, she says: “Strangely, when I sing ‘The Bones,’ that song just naturally, over the years, has taken on such new meanings for me, just professionally and personally.”
Morris just released her new EP Interruption August 2. On the genre-bending record, Morris picks through her divorce and how she’s moved on.
“This feels like an incredible journey of discovery,” she says, “and also the heartbreak of a relationship dying and what fun and joy you find after trauma or tragedy like that.”

And while the divorce inspired cathartic songs like “I Hope I Never Fall in Love” and “This Is How a Woman Leaves,” Morris says she’s focused on co-parenting Hayes with Hurd.
“I never want to belittle or feel the need to, because I think we both have so much love for each other and our son, so whatever comes out musically is our point of view, and we need to process it in our own way. “, she says. “This is my turn. I’m just moving on as best I know I can.”
