Nicole Richie Says She and Daughter Harlow, 16, ‘Share Everything’ When It Comes to Clothing and Makeup (Exclusive)

For as many years as Nicole Richie has been in the spotlight, sporting a string of stunning looks and working with various makeup artists and stylists, she’s still picking up tips and tricks from her daughter Harlow, 16.

“I learn everything from her,” Richie, 42, tells PEOPLE in this week’s issue. “You’d think I’d know how to do make-up after doing my makeup for so long, but I’m really bad at it, and she teaches me everything.”

Richie (who also shares son Sparrow, 14, with husband Joel Madden) says her eldest has a “full Sephora in the bedroom” where she can go “free shopping”. Harlow picked up her beauty skills as a competitive dancer.

“When she competes, it’s a lot of hair and makeup,” says Richie. “She has been dancing for a long time and I have never done her hair or makeup. She did it all. It can make eyelashes, it can contour. It’s her passion. She loves it and is great at it.”

And when it comes to fashion, “we’re in each other’s closets,” says Richie. “Mom never told me I couldn’t borrow anything from her closet, so I have that approach with Harlow as well. She takes my things, I take hers. She has really great basics and it’s something I don’t always spend my time or money shopping for and she will sometimes borrow jewelry. We share almost everything.”

The House of Harlow founder calls her mom Brenda Harvey-Richie “my first beauty muse” and credits her with introducing her to Estée Lauder, with whom she collaborated on the beauty brand’s new “Night Night Club” campaign.

“I would sit in her dressing room and watch her get ready,” Richie recalls. “She had a huge bathtub and I would sit in her empty bathtub and watch her do her skin care and make-up, and Estée Lauder is one of those brands that I paid a lot of attention to. And it’s been on my counter for as long as I can remember.”

Today, Richie says Harlow has “a whole nighttime routine, too.” “I think my daughter is into it,” he adds.

Richie and her family had a matching all-black moment at the film’s April premiere Don’t tell mom the babysitter is deadbut the actress says: “We didn’t plan it at all.”

“We didn’t plan to wear all black,” says Richie. “My husband and son mostly wear everything in black, so I guess that’s no surprise. It just happened that way. My kids have a very strong sense of personal style that I wouldn’t dream of interfering with.”
