Mariah Carey Reveals She Hasn’t Had a Driver’s License for 7 Years: ‘I Let It Expire’

Mariah Carey has not sat behind the wheel of a car for a long time.

While appearing on Show Jennifer Hudson on Wednesday, the “All I Want for Christmas” singer, 54, admitted that she hasn’t driven anywhere by herself in seven years — but was quick to clarify that it wasn’t because of some diva behavior.

“I don’t have a permit, because I let it expire,” she explained to host Jennifer Hudson. “I had one and then I went to where I lived. I lived in the city and you don’t really want to drive around Manhattan. Well, I don’t.”

“And then when I left, I said, ‘OK, my license.’ They said, ‘Oh, well it expired — and it expired seven years ago,” she continued, drawing laughter from the audience. “So then I had to retake the test.”

Hudson, 42, added: “I don’t think I would pass if I took the test again.”

— That’s what I’m saying! Carey replied.

Although the pop icon said she plans to get her driver’s license again, in the meantime she’s more comfortable letting other people drive her where she needs to go.

“If there was one street where I could say, ‘OK, this is a safe street for me to drive on,’ I would,” she said. “But the thing is that for me it’s better to go with someone in the car and not drive, but me can drive.”

Her long-expired driver’s license isn’t the only surprising revelation Carey made during her talk show appearance. After Hudson’s question, “What is the most casual item of clothing in your closet?” Carey stated that she does not have sneakers.

“Probably some disgusting slides that someone made me buy,” she said. “Because I don’t have sneakers.”

Hudson, looking shocked by her statement, followed up with, “You don’t know?”

“No, I don’t,” Carey replied. “Because I get a blister on the back of my foot.”

While the Grammy winner admitted that the heels “hurt, too,” she said she finds them easier to wear because she tiptoes. “I’ve always done it,” she explained. “So that’s something.”

The Queen of Christmas also opened up about her holiday preparations – and her tendency to go overboard with her festive decorations. When Hudson asked her how many Christmas trees she had, Carey looked a little sheepish.

“Oh, well, I don’t want anyone to feel left out because we have a lot of Christmas trees,” she said.

“What’s a lot, Mariah?” Hudson pressed her, smiling. “Like, a whole field of trees?”

“It’s not a field, per se,” Carey joked before explaining her situation with the tree.

“So in the main part of the house there will be a beautiful, tall Christmas tree with gold and silver – not real gold. It’s just for the beauty of the tree,” she said.

She then explained that she had another tree that was less showy but much more sentimental.

“And then I have a smaller, multi-colored tree with lights. Like a Charlie Brown tree, with some decorations that my fans made for me and stuff,” she told the audience.

Carey is currently on the road for her Merry Christmas One and All tour, which kicked off Wednesday in California.
