For Mariah Carey, working with Ariana Grande was a “fantasy” come to life.
In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, the Christmas Queen (55) talked about her experience working with the “Into You” artist (31), with whom she originally collaborated on “Oh Santa!” 2010 and most recently in February for the official remix of “Yes, And?”
As for the latter, Carey said Grande called her because of the song, which was on a “slightly deluxe” version of her album. Eternal Sun.

“I thought it would be something that would be fun because we were already working together at that point, and it was just a cool little moment,” the R&B icon said over the phone. “And I love her. I think she’s amazing.”
Carey also praised Grande for being a “really good person.”
“She’s super talented, and working together was a lot of fun,” she added. In the show “Yes, and?” Grande sings, “Be your own fucking best friend,” but the two pop powerhouses take the song’s self-empowerment message even further by lifting each other up through the new version.
Carey then adds his signature whistling note on the opening house-inspired beat, then helps out Sweetener artist at the beginning of the remix, joining her in the pre-chorus and chorus.
The “We Belong Together” singer also gets her own solo on the second verse: “Now I’m done sharing / This hypocrisy with you / Baby, you’re rejected / Come back, no more pretending, bye.”
After dropping the track, the “Thank U, Next” hitmaker celebrated its release with a fun Instagram video featuring her and her collaborator.
In it, the singer-songwriter struts around in a polka dot dress before the screen pans to a glamorous-looking Carey belting out a whistle. At the end of the visual, the duo embrace.

In the caption, Grande shared how much she admires Carey.
“I love you so much @mariahcarey 🥹 yes, and? remix now 🫧♡🦋 🫧♡🦋🫧♡🦋,” she wrote.
Carey responded in the comments, “I love you Ari!!! ❤️❤️❤️ thank you for including me in this record 🤩😍🔥.”
